A GOSPEL TREASURY
Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
'Don’t speak of death,' said Peter
as he took the Lord aside.
'Don’t even think about it.
It’s a thought I can’t abide.
If you should die tomorrow
then your movement would be dead.
And think what would become of us.
It fills my heart with dread.
'Your church is much too feeble,
just a pitiable few.
We must have many thousands
and it all depends on you.
How can you be Messiah
if your death is premature?
You must gather men and power
for your kingdom to endure.'
Like Peter, we so often think
the church’s power depends,
like human institutions, on
its wealth and numbers, friends.
But no! The church goes forward,
not by human strategem,
Just two or three may gather
and the Lord is there with them.
So pick your crosses up, my friends
and join the march sublime.
Our task is just to change the world,
one mortal at a time,
to change the hearts of people,
not just changing their facade.
The task is hard. But we’ll succeed.
We have the help of God.
as he took the Lord aside.
