Worship
Lectionary Worship Workbook, Series IV, Cycle C
Soul Motion
Object:
You shall pass judgment on yourself. That is the hardest thing of all ...
If you succeed in judging yourself, it is because you are truly wise.

Call To Worship
Leader: Good morning! This is the place to be if you are seeking the Holy One. This is the place to be if you long to be "at home." This is the place to praise the living God!
People: Thank God for this faith family and for this place of safety and inspiration.
Leader: Thank God for the scriptures that encourage our journey together: Come, everyone who is thirsty -- here is water!
People: We are here to honor the Creator of the universe and to listen again for guidance for our days and nights.
Leader: Come, all of you who search for satisfaction in life.
People: We turn to God, knowing that divine thoughts are not our thoughts and Holy ways are not our ways. We ask God for mercy and direction.
Leader: Together, we sing and pray; together we expect the Holy One to move among us.
People: Together and individually, we ask God to be present in our world through our thinking and our doing!
(The candles can be lighted, including the Christ candle.)
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader or Unison)
Living God -- we are grateful that you make your home with humankind. Body, mind, and soul, we are glad you are here loving us and inspiring us to make your kingdom visible. We feel your presence and we listen for your guidance. Share our joy in this hour and satisfy our hearts. Amen.
Call To Confession (Leader)
There are times when it is not easy to know what is good and what is evil. There are times when we lose our way. In these moments of silence, welcome the Spirit to soothe and guide.
Community Confession (Unison)
Holy One -- our minds are open before you.
When temptations come, give us clarity about your will for our lives.
When idols sneak into our thoughts and activities, remind us not to tamper with your grace and power.
Nurture our souls with words and silences, with relationships and fresh opportunities.
We walk the human path Jesus walked; grant us insight to be faithful. Amen.
Sermon Idea
Using Psalm 63, the sermon might explore contemporary yearnings for spiritual satisfaction, touching on the various religions, and concluding with the Christian plan. Consider aspects of our culture that "dry us out," coming back to the psalmist's feeling that we are in the "shadow of God's wings."
The psalm may indicate one way to deal with depression, sadness, and loneliness: verbalize the distress, imagine that God is present in a variety of ways -- mother hen, protector, friend, stabilizing rock -- and respond with music that touches all the emotions, ending with songs of joy. The psalm reminds us again and again that we are not able to travel this human way alone; we must seek sanctuary and companions.
Contemporary Affirmation (Unison)
The Holy comes to us in many different ways. God continues to create in and around us, leading us to food for our souls and our bodies.
We find courage in Jesus of Nazareth who resisted the temptations that come to humankind: power over others, material wealth that obscures divine goodness, and arrogance that resists attention to divine presence.
With Holy Spirit enthusing us, we choose to live in ways that are hospitable and gracious, insightful and generous in kind deeds.
Together, we have a significant voice in our culture to demand justice for all.
In our living and in our dying, we are not alone. God is with us. Amen.
Offertory Statement (Leader)
Making the world a better place and brightening this corner of town happen because we are blessed. Ministry in this place continues because you faithfully give money to pay the electricity, the water, and repair the walls. Ministry continues here because you give yourself to God.
Doxology
O Love, How Deep, How Broad, How High (v. 5, modified)
tune: DEO GRACIAS
All glory to the living God for love so deep, so high, so broad;
The Trinity whom we adore forever and forever more.
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
With mind and body, we praise you, Holy One. We have received inspiration and we are satisfied.
For your constant love and for resources enough to share we give you thanks. Amen.
Intercessory Prayers (Leader or Readers)
Fathering God -- life demands that we make choices, that we make decisions about how to buy and sell, how to help and halt, how to serve and be served. We turn to you for clarity. Work through us to halt the terror we feel. With your "right hand," stop the greed for power and material goods that grip our global village.
Mothering God -- with your "left hand" compassion, feed the children of this planet; save the water and air so people and land can be healthy. Minister to life plagued with poverty in every nation. Come to leaders in each country and reveal the nasty reality of humanity without shelter, food, compassion, and mercy. Transform the human heart and mind throughout the planet. Move among us with healing for our physical aliments and for our emotional angst.
God of All Life -- give us strength and wisdom to carry us along our human journey. Amen.
Benediction (Leader)
May the road continue smooth before you;
May there be enough light along the way;
May peace greet you at every cross road
And joy accompany you to the end.
Through whatever pain and suffering is yours to endure
Know that God is in it with you.
Amid every temptation that comes to you
Be aware that wisdom is yours for the asking.
