Object: two different kinds of medicine and a heavy pan
Good morning, boys and girls. How are you feeling today? (let them respond) That's good, because if you weren't, you could probably take some of this medicine here! (hold up the medicine) Did you ever see that commercial on television about the woman who has a very sore arm? In that commercial, she tells us that she has arthritis and that it is very hard for her to pick up something like this pan. (show them the pan)
Would one of you like to lift this pan? (let several children try to lift it) It is pretty heavy but it isn't too heavy for you, is it? Well, in the commercial, the woman with the sore arm just can't lift it. Her arms hurt too much. So guess what she is told to do? Does anyone know? (let them guess) A man with several bottles of medicine tells her to try this one special kind. So she tries it. What happens to her after she takes the medicine? (let them tell you) Right! She can lift the pan without any trouble at all! It is almost like magic, isn't it, boys and girls? The woman's pain goes away after she takes this particular pill. That must be a pretty wonderful pill, don't you agree? (let them respond)
Then there is another commercial about a person who has a terrible cold. She is sitting in bed, coughing and sneezing and blowing her nose. She looks and sounds just terrible! Did you ever have a coughing--sneezing--dripping kind of cold, boys and girls? (let them respond) Well, then you know just how this woman looked and sounded. However, she sent her husband to the drug store for something very special. She knew that there was a kind of medicine which would stop her sneezing, take away her sore throat, clear up her head so she could breathe, stop her coughing, and help her to sleep. Did you ever hear of a medicine like that? (let them respond) Well, I guess this medicine really worked - at least on television, because after she took it, the woman was able to sleep.
You know, sometimes we read some of the Apostle Paul's letters during our worship service. Paul must have had a special problem - either a bad pain or some other kind of thing that was hard for him to live with. Paul doesn't tell us what it is - but apparently there weren't any special medicines for it like the ones we have today. Paul even talked to the Lord about it, but the Lord said not to worry. God's grace would help him to stand it. Sometimes all the medicines in the world won't help us feel better, will they, boys and girls? Then we have to remember Paul; he just put his trust in the Lord and let the Lord take care of him. That isn't always easy for us to do, is it, boys and girls? That's what trust and faith are all about - putting our hand in the Lord's hand and letting him take care of us. The next time we see one of these commercials about pills and other wonderful medicines, let's remember that sometimes we have to just look to the Lord - especially when everything else fails.
