Fifty-two Object Lessons For Children In Worship

Shepherd's crook or picture
Good morning, boys and girls. Have you ever been to a lost and found department? They have them in airports, bus depots, large department stores, and even in churches, because people often lose things when they are away from home. Sometimes we even lose things around home, don't we? I had a friend once who was always losing his glasses, sometimes when they were right on top of his head!
Have you ever lost anything? (Responses -- Allow a representative feedback.) And what did you do when you lost it? (Responses -- Cry, tell someone, search, and so forth.) Yes, we search hard for things that become lost, and we search all the harder in proportion to the value of the thing that we've lost. That's why it is always good to know about the lost and found department.
Shepherds are people who take care of sheep. Often they live lonely lives away up in the high pasture country where they are alone with their sheep. Shepherds sometimes lose things, too. Who can tell me what a shepherd is liable to lose? Yes, shepherds lose sheep, because sometimes they wander off from the flock or get themselves stranded in places where they can't get out.
Jesus told a story about a shepherd who had one hundred sheep. One got lost. The shepherd cared so much for that one sheep that he left the 99 who were safe and searched high and low for the lost one until he found it. Jesus used that story to tell us that God is like that when we get ourselves lost or stray away from God. He comes looking for us because He loves us as a part of his family and never wants to lose us.
The Bible says, "He (Jesus) came to seek and to save that which was lost." Aren't you glad that God sent Jesus into the world to find us?
(Prayer of thanksgiving for the Shepherd/Savior we have in Jesus.)
