LOVING THE WORLD
Prayer
Praying On The Journey With Christ
A Commitment To Encounter Christ Through The Gospel Of John
Object:
John 3:16
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life."
COMMENTARY
This, the best known verse of Scripture, needs no commentary. It is a primal source of faith to all who believe and among the first of all passages to be committed to memory.
PRAYER
Lord God, you loved, therefore, you gave. You loved profusely. You gave extravagantly. You loved the world, and your world makes life possible. You gave your Son, so that life in your world might have joy beyond earth's own experience.
Lord God, you love the world you gave, the Son you gave, and the creatures made in your very own image. You have made it possible for us to know earth life as first life, and life in Christ your Son as full life, forever life, eternal life.
Lord God, you included all of us in your loving, all of us in your giving, though we are all still sinners. You included everyone in your call to the hopeful experience of faith that leads to eternal life. You made the world and all of us in it, and we are all dependent upon you. May we rejoice in your love, your greatness, and your willingness to let us share in the experiences of beauty, love, and life in this physical world.
Lord God, you related us all to one another, so that none of us is less than precious in your eyes, none of us less precious than your only begotten Son. Our highest goal is to know you as our Father, one another as brother and sister, and your world as home. May we never despise the beauty of the physical, the mystery of the Spirit in flesh, your love incarnate in a perfect Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Lord God, keep us from yearning so much for the spiritual that we despise the physical. Open our eyes to see your creative hand in every particle of dust, in every vista in the universe, in every child's wrist that pulses with life in every land. Help us love what you loved and give as you gave. May we enjoy these moments on earth in the flesh until you come with a new life that will be marked forever with marvelous appreciation for this one. Amen.
