In Matthew 22 Jesus gives a parable to show that a marriage feast is like the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus explains that the Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated by the story of a king who prepared a great wedding dinner for his son. He invited many guests to the dinner. When the dinner was ready, the king sent messengers out to notify everyone that it was time to come. But the people refused to come. The king even sent out other servants to tell the people that everything was ready. It was time to come. Unfortunately the guests he had invited just laughed and went on about their worldly business.
Then the king directed his servants to go out into the street and invite everyone they saw. So they did. They brought back all they could find. Finally, the banquet hall was filled with guests.
Do you understand this parable? How this marriage feast is like the Kingdom of Heaven?
The king is God and his son is the Lord Jesus. The king sent forth his servants to the "lost sheep of the house of Israel." The servants were his apostles, and in the Old Testament the messengers were the prophets. But the Israelites rejected God's invitation. God sent others, but they refused to come. They even killed the messengers.
The king's saying "everything is ready" is hinting at the death of Christ on the cross and his salvation for believers. Then the king told his servants to go out into the streets and invite people in. This is the worldwide offer to salvation. It refers to the present age in which we live. All of us are invited.
Many have the invitation to salvation extended to them, but only a very few accept and are chosen.
