A mission modeled on the Master's message and ministry
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Cycle B
Gospel Note:
The commissioning of the Twelve underscores the continuity
between what their mission is to be and what Jesus' has been:
they are to preach, exorcise, heal and withal suffer rejection.
Remarkable here is the eschatological urgency implied in Jesus'
instructions to "travel light," which makes for quite a contrast
with today's Christian mission, both theologically and
practically.*
*This theme, gospel note and prayer follow Lutheran, Episcopal
and Roman Catholic lectionaries.
Liturgical Color:
Green
Suggested Hymns:
The Son Of God, Our Christ
The Lord Will Come And Not Be Slow
Dear Christians, One And All
O God, O Lord Of Heaven And Earth
From God Can Nothing Move Me
God Moves In A Mysterious Way
Proper 10 ù Pentecost 8 ù OT 15
Lord, help us to capture the sense of enthusiasm
and joy which the disciples felt as they stepped
out onto the mission field!
That kind of boldness,
that kind of sharing,
that kind of stretching to serve Jesus ...
really shakes us up!
What risks they took!
Inspire us with the same kind of
boldness and
zeal and
risk-taking
which was so contagious in the early
community of faith.
Do not allow us to act as if we are immunized
against the effects of the Spirit!
Fortify us with your power.
Bring into our prayers a sense of honesty and
seriousness, depth and enthusiasm.
Lord, pour out your great grace upon us
as you have promised,
for we are ready to grow bold for
the sake of the kingdom.
Amen.
