Series III, Cycle A
CALL TO WORSHIP
Worship God, our Sovereign, with reverence for the majesty of God's name in all the earth!
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God before time, God in our time, God Eternal, you mark our days and years for what we have experienced and what we have learned. You give us time to develop characters shaped by joy and sorrow. We do not always learn willingly and change our ways to follow the way of Jesus Christ. Pardon our stubbornness and give usfurt her time to learn and improve our times for the sake of your perfect Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
DECLARATION OF GOD'S FORGIVENESS
Hear the Good News! We have been given time to reconsider our ways and to prepare ourselves for the day of judgement yet to come. Friends, believe the Good News! In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
EXHORTATION
Feed the hungry; give drink to the thirsty; welcome strangers; clothe the naked; visit the sick and prisoners; you will be ready for the day of reckoning.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Open our eyes, Divine Healer, that we may see your face in the faces of the poor, the sick and the prisoner and in caring for them give homage to you, our Savior and Friend. Amen.
PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
Unchanging God, Contemporary Christ, ageless Spirit, for all that you teach us in the course of life we give thanks. We are grateful for what you provide for us to eat and drink and for the pleasures of meaningful work. We enjoy times of recreation and love making. We anticipate the end of hate and war and want. We look for the defaced to be removed with the coming of the new heaven and earth in which there is love perfected, peace with justice and plenty shared generously. Hasten the time of healing when we can live together without fear or misunderstanding in your new heaven and earth under the banner of love. Glory to God, drying tears, ending suffering, sharing glory. Amen.
PRAYER OF DEDICATION
God of the past year, God of today, God of this new year, receive the offerings that we bring and the service we pledge not only for your worship in this place but for ministry to those in need; for Christ's sake. Amen.
PSALM 8
O LORD, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,
to silence the enemy and the avenger.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have established;
what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them?
Yet you have made them a little lower than God,
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet,
all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O LORD, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
