The Sermon:
Some people do not love or obey God. They are living lives away from his care. They are called lost. Every single person is important and loved by God. He does not want anyone lost. That is why he sent Jesus, his Son, to teach and show how much we are all loved and how God wants our love. When a person decides to listen to Jesus, love, trust, and obey him, then the Bible says they are found.
When Jesus was teaching, he often told stories called parables. A parable is a story Jesus told using ordinary or common things that everyone knew about to help them and us understand what he wants us to know and do. Jesus told this story to help us understand about lost and found. Luke 15:8-10 has the story.
Suppose a woman lost a silver coin and it was very valuable. Her family might not even be able to eat if it stays lost. Perhaps, it is part of her wedding ceremony, like a wedding ring, as was the custom in those days. It is very important to her and valuable. Jesus said that she should light a lamp, sweep, and hunt. *When at last she finds the lost coin, she is so happy that she calls her friends and neighbors and says to them, "Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost."
Then Jesus says in verse 10, "Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents."
Jesus means that one who repents is one who turns to Jesus to love and obey him. In doing so, that one is found. God and the angels in heaven want the lost to be found. Just as the woman and her friends are happy and rejoice together because the coin is found, so too, when someone decides to love and trust Jesus, there is great joy in heaven.
This is something for us to think about. We don't want to be lost from Jesus. So, let's love him and try to live the way he wants.
