Lectionary Worship Aids
Series VI, Cycle B
First Lesson: Isaiah 50:4-9a
Theme: Trusting The Lord
Call To Worship
Leader: Sing praise to God who has shown his love for us through his Son, Jesus Christ.
People: His love is a shelter in the storm and a light in the darkness.
Leader: If we will listen, his presence will direct our lives.
People: We will indeed listen to him, and we will go where he leads us.
Leader: Come, let us worship together!
Collect
Lord, we come to you with grateful hearts for the way in which you have sustained and strengthened us in all the trials and tribulations we confront. We ask now that you will give us the tongue of a teacher that from our experience and our growing faith in you we can strengthen the weary. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
God of all the ages, we need the forgiveness you have promised to those who turn to you. We know how Christ suffered for us, and how many of his disciples willingly bore the pains of persecution. But as for us, we prefer to avoid suffering and would rather choose the way of ease. Forgive us, we pray, and open our hearts and minds to the lessons to be learned from the things that cause us to suffer. Amen.
Hymns
"Only Trust Him"
"He Leadeth Me"

Second Lesson: Philippians 2:5-11
Theme: Imitating Christ's Humility
Call To Worship
When Jesus made his triumphal entry into Jerusalem he did not ride a big white stallion as military conquerors were accustomed to doing. Rather, he humbled himself and rode a colt, the foal of a donkey. Jesus was humble and walked the path of obedience all the way to his death -- his death on a cross.
Come, let us sing our hosannas to Christ our Savior.
Collect
We thank you, Father God, that your Son became like a human being and appeared in human likeness. Because of this, O God, we know that you understand us and are well aware of the difficulties we face as we strive to do your will and share your love and concern with others.
We praise your holy name, O God, and give thanks for Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O God, we make endless excuses for our weakness, and when we give in to temptation we say it is only human. Yet we know that your Son, Jesus Christ, was human even as we are, but he did not yield to temptation. Forgive our weakness, we pray, and by your Spirit enable us to follow more closely the way Jesus has shown us. Amen.
Hymns
"All Glory, Laud, And Honor"
"What Wondrous Love Is This"

Gospel Lesson: Mark 14:1--15:47 or Mark 15:1-39 (40-47)
Theme: Jesus Is Crucified
Call To Worship
Leader: And the disciples began to rejoice and praise God, saying:
People: Hosanna to the son of David!
Leader: Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!
People: Blessed be the kingdom of our father David that is coming!
Leader: Hosanna!
People: Hosanna in the highest!
Collect
Lord, on this last Sunday of Lent we are reminded how shallow are our loud hosannas unless we support them with the costly sacrificial gifts of our lives. Let the Lord of life enter our lives this day, and may we in joyful homage lay ourselves before him as servants of the King. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we are too prone to follow the crowd. We let others decide for us when it is appropriate to take a stand. Forgive our weakness, we pray, and strengthen our determination to do those things that further the coming of your kingdom regardless of the cost to our own comfort. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"Hosanna, Loud Hosannas"
"O Sacred Head, Now Wounded"
