Piggyback Riders
Children's sermon
The Giant Book Of Children's Sermons
Matthew To Revelation
Object: have children choose partners to give each other piggyback rides; sweeper, dust rags, cleaning supplies
Good morning, boys and girls. Today is a super day. Here we are in church on a wonderful Sunday morning, and we are sharing our love with one another. That means that almost everything is right in the world. Today I want each of you to pick up a partner, and we will learn something about sharing. (have them take partners)
Now that you all have a partner, I want you to choose which one of you is going to give the other a piggyback ride. I know that all of you have ridden piggyback, but now we want you to share your back or the ride with someone else. And while you are giving or taking a piggyback ride, I also want you to help me clean up the front of the church. I brought along some dust rags, a sweeper, and the things that you need to clean. The person who is riding, of course, will not have to work, but only the person who is giving the ride will be working. (let them do this for a couple of minutes until the point is made) That isn't sharing, is it? One person is doing all of the work and the other person is just going along for the ride. Sharing would be if we took turns or if the other person didn't ride at all, but instead helped with the cleaning.
As Christians we are supposed to share not only the joys of being Christians, but also the work of being Christians. Some Christians think that they are only supposed to share the joy. They love to sing the hymns, go to church, and talk with their Christian friends. But there is a lot more to Christianity than those things. If you are a Christian, you must also visit the sick and teach others what you know about Jesus. Sometimes people don't want to listen, or they don't like the things that you do as a Christian. They make life very hard for us. But Christians share the work just like they share the joy.
If you had to give someone a ride all of the time on your back and still do all of the work, you would get pretty tired of helping your friend. You want your friends to share the work just like they share the joy. That is the way that God wants it also. He wants you to have a good time being a Christian, and you can have a good time working, but he wants you to share the work.
The next time you get or give a piggyback ride, I hope that you will remember how we are to share the joy and the work of being Christians.
