New Mercies I See
Susie and I had both grown up in cities, so our move to Thornberry, a township 30 miles from the nearest population center, was our first experience with rural life, and we arrived feeling like pioneers. The parsonage had a large backyard, so during our first springtime there, we planted a vegetable garden. Though we'd had no experience at gardening, our parishioners were generous with advice, and before long, I carried the first basket load of green beans -- triumphantly -- into our kitchen. Again relying on advice from church members, we canned the beans for use during the coming winter.
