Lectionary Worship Workbook, Series IV, Cycle C

Object:
Zoos are no longer in people's good graces.
Religion faces the same problem.
Certain illusions about freedom plague them both.

Call To Worship
Leader: It's a good morning! Are you awake and breathing deeply? Are you thankful, angry, secure, defeated? Are you ready to sing?
People: Ah, yes. We are thankful for life and we are seeking security and happiness.
Leader: We have called to God many times and the Holy One has sustained us and restored us to hopefulness.
People: With music and dance, with words and silence, we thank God for divine goodness among us!
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
Energy of the Universe -- dawn reminded us that you are still creating! Dawn reminded us that we are surrounded by all sorts of beauty and all sorts of suffering. Thank you for being with us through every day, all day and all night. In this hour, we listen carefully for your voice and we articulate what is going on with us. Be real with us, for we value your intimacy with us. Refresh us with your tenderness. Amen.
Call To Confession (Leader)
We have been praying for divine mercy with the United States and with Israel. We believe that righteousness and peace will embrace both nations. We have been praying for personal abundance and for an end to terrorism around the globe. This morning's scriptures remind us that human beings have always turned to one god or another when they are backed into a corner. Pray with me the printed prayer and then have your personal conversation with the Holy One.
Community Confession (Unison)
Listening God -- violence and hunger are apparent in every nation.
Betrayals and dis-ease plague our homes.
Apathy and fear breed in our faith family.
Individually, we are hungry for something that is not satisfied with calories and flavors.
Restore our vision of what is possible when you are among us.
Open our ears to your voice; open our mouths to speak life-affirming words. Amen.
Sermon Idea
The gospel lesson describes what happens when a person decides to make God visible in choices, entertainment, use of resources, in relationships, and decides to participate in the Reign of God. Jesus speaks of an experience with holiness that is both contagious and divisive. When any one of us chooses to live simply, respecting all creatures and the earth, we set ourselves against the dominant culture. In Hosea's story, Gomer by her own decision, apparently, chooses gifts and sex outside of her primary relationship. Her religious practices are not acceptable to her husband, Hosea. They are divided by their preferences and their interpretations of faithfulness. Paul teaches the Colossians to hold on to their understanding of union with Jesus and to have an attitude of gratitude. Such a decision and lifestyle magnified their religious and ethic practices. Is this an essential challenge for today's Christians?
Contemporary Affirmation (Unison)
We know God, the Creator, by many names;
we believe that God, the Holy One, loves us and all creation.
We know Jesus of Nazareth taught people to love friends and enemies;
we believe Jesus' teachings lead us to satisfaction in living.
We believe the Holy Spirit is moving throughout the global village,
inviting all peoples to live peaceably together;
we experience the Holy Spirit to be motivating us to journey toward
internal contentment and external service for justice.
In community, we are stimulated intellectually to ask questions
about the meaning of life and Mystery.
We are challenged to know ourselves and to relate to God.
We are soothed during the painful parts of life and in good times,
we share our rejoicings! Hurrah! Yippee! Hallelujah!
Offertory Statement (Leader)
Let us "honor the Holy One." When Jesus told his disciples to "Pray," he said, "that we would have the daily food we need." We have other needs, as well. In our culture, it takes money to buy what we need and what we want; it takes money, time, and skills to sustain ministry here. Give what you can.
Doxology
The Lone, Wild Bird (v. 2, modified), tune: PROSPECT
The ends of earth are in God's hand, The sea's dark deep and far-off land.
And I am yours! I rest in you. Great Spirit, come, and rest in me.
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
Holy One -- we are grateful for the teachings of Jesus and for his encouragement to ask, seek, and knock. We expect to receive enough money to keep this building beautiful and to help feed the hungry in our neighborhood and throughout the global village. Thank you for the diligence and generosity of these people. Amen.
Intercessory Prayers (Leader or Readers)
Unifying Spirit -- we gather as companions on the journey to the Holy. We are making decisions based on our interpretations of the words of Jesus. We are grateful that you are present in us and among us, giving us contentment and visions for the tomorrows. Let us not be enslaved by the deceitful practices of our culture nor by a bondage to material things. Keep us maturing in spiritual practices.
God of Cities -- we are glad Abraham was thoughtful enough to ask if you would destroy good people along with evil people in Sodom. We too ask that as we look at the world and see violent men taking advantage of children. We ask you, "Is there an end in sight to human greed and savagery in Darfur, Israel, and Palestine, in Pakistan, Napal, and India, in China, Columbia, and in the United States?" We long for the good news of peace. We long for young women and men to learn and to work and to travel and to provide love for children. We wait eagerly for the good news of peace.
Enlivening Spirit -- when we are surrounded by troubles, we turn to you. When we are in pain and facing disaster, we expect you to help us. When we face uncertain tomorrows, we look for the courage of Jesus. We know your love for us is eternal. Continue to work within us and guide us to safety and tranquility. Heal us from the inside out.
Divine Verb and Noun -- your creativity calls to us and we, too, find new and multiple ways to benefit our living on this earth. We live forward into the future and pray for the next generation, for our children and grandchildren. May they learn compassion, truthfulness, generosity, beauty, and self-control. Let them know and feel your creating presence. Amen.
Benediction/Charge (Leader)
Life is a journey to Mystery.
Experiment with multiple names for God;
Explore different ways to respond to the Holy Spirit.
Laugh each day and unbuild the overwhelming towers of the world.
Notice possibilities around each corner;
Make dreams and cultivate a glad heart!
Holy Spirit empowers you and me to live real life --
Peace be yours, deep peace. Amen.
