Lord, you just don’t make it easy
when you say to follow you,
so your churches are not crowded
and your followers are few.
For there’s some of what you said
that’s hard for people to accept.
Some of it divides your people.
Some is easy to reject.
Take for instance, 'Eat my body,
Drink my blood.' That’s what you said.
Most of those who heard you say it
turned away from where you led.
Lord, you knew that they’d have problems
thinking of your flesh as food.
And you knew that Jews would boggle
at the thought of drinking blood.
Almost seems to me you had
a plan to drive them all away.
Seems almost as though you wanted
only just the twelve to stay.
I can think of no way better
you could earn their enmity.
Almost seems to me you planned
to send yourself to Calvary.
