Series VI, Cycle C
Theme: The Price Of Forsaking God
Call To Worship
Leader: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the lands. Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!
People: Know that the Lord is God! It is he that made us, and we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Leader: Enter his gates with thanksgiving; and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name!
People: For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.
Collect
Eternal God, our Creator, may we never forget your many blessings and be lured by the attractions of the world to worship idols of greed and materialism. You have shown us your love for us in many ways and especially through Jesus Christ. With thankful and grateful hearts, we pray for your Holy Spirit to sustain us in the trials and temptations we face day by day. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we confess that there have been times when we have turned away from you, the spring of fresh water, and tried to quench our thirst from the brackish waters offered to us by the hucksters of the world. Forgive us, we pray, and help us to share our faith in you, that in the sharing we, too, might be strengthened. We pray in Jesus'Êname. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Heavenly Father, on every side we are beset by the cries of the needy. Accept these gifts, we pray, and through your Church may they be used to alleviate the spiritual and physical hunger of many. Amen.
Hymns
"Breathe On Me, Breath Of God"
"And Can It Be That I Should Gain"
"O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go"
Proper 17/Ordinary Time 22
Sunday between August 28 and September 3 inclusive
Second Lesson: Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16
Theme: How To Please God
Call To Worship
Leader: God has said, "I will never leave you; I will never abandon you."
People: Let us be bold, then, and say, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid."
Leader: Do not forget to do good and to help one another.
People: These are the sacrifices that please God.
All: Praise be to God!
Collect
Eternal and Everlasting God, we know that you are the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, and that we can depend on your never-changing love revealed to us in Jesus Christ. Thanks be to you, O God; may our lips show forth your praise. Individually and collectively as a church, we offer up ourselves to be used by you for the building of your kingdom and the spreading of your gospel of love and forgiveness. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Heavenly Father, we try to be faithful disciples welcoming strangers and remembering those in prison and those who are suffering, but we confess that we find it difficult to put ourselves in their place and really share their pain, their loneliness, and their needs. Forgive us, we pray, and may your Holy Spirit enable us truly to show forth your love. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Loving God, even as you have been generous in your love toward us, may we share beyond measure with those who have not known your love. In that spirit we present these offerings. Amen.
Hymns
"More Love To Thee, O Christ"
"Must Jesus Bear The Cross Alone"
"What Does The Lord Require"
Proper 17/Ordinary Time 22
Sunday between August 28 and September 3 inclusive
Gospel Lesson: Luke 14:1, 7-14
Theme: Humility And Hospitality
Call To Worship
We come to give thanks to God, our Creator and Sustainer. We gather to join our voices in praise to Almighty God, the Father of our Lord, Jesus Christ. We open our minds and hearts to hear the Word of God, and to learn what is expected of present-day disciples of Jesus.
Come, let us worship!
Collect
Lord Jesus, we come to sit at your feet and listen again to some of your parables that we might better understand what it means to be your disciples in today's world. Bless our time together, we pray, and send us forth as your messengers to proclaim by word and deed your love for all humanity. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O God, humility does not come naturally to us, and we pray for the new life in the Spirit that will change us from being self-centered and egotistical to humble followers of Jesus, putting others first and ourselves last. In Jesus'Êname we pray. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Lord, we may not always find it possible to invite strangers, the homeless, the sick into our homes, but we present these gifts and pray that they may be used to help meet the needs of our neighbors near and far. Amen.
Hymns
"Come, O Thou Traveler Unknown"
"Cuando El Pobre" ("When The Poor Ones")
"Where Charity And Love Prevail"
