Series VI, Cycle C
Theme: Sorrow For Those Who Do Not Obey God
Call To Worship
Leader: O God, my defender, answer me when I pray!
People: When I was in trouble, you helped me. Be kind to me now and hear my prayer.
Leader: There are many who pray: "Give us more blessings, O Lord. Look on us with kindness!"
People: But the joy that you have given me is more than they will ever have.
Leader: When I lie down, I go to sleep in peace.
People: You alone, O Lord, keep me perfectly safe.
Collect
Understanding and merciful God, our hearts are filled with sorrow, and we find it difficult to hold back our tears when we look out on the world. The hungry, the homeless, and the abused cry out for help. Neighbors cannot live together in peace, and nations try to settle their differences by force of arms. We lift our prayers for a better world this morning, and let it begin with me. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O God, too long have we been part of the world's problems rather than using our time and abilities to let your message of peace and reconciliation radiate from our lives. Help us to see how we can be part of the solution to the needs of the world, and give us the power and the courage to act accordingly. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
O Lord, with these gifts we light our little candle so that together with others we may help to bring light, your Light, to a dark world. Amen.
Hymns
"There Is A Balm In Gilead"
"Trust And Obey"
"Come, Ye Sinners, Poor And Needy"
Proper 20/Ordinary Time 25
Sunday between September 18 and September 24 inclusive
Second Lesson: 1 Timothy 2:1-7
Theme: Church Worship
Call To Worship
Leader: Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might.
People: He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.
Leader: Seek the Lord while he may be found, and call upon him while he is near.
People: Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised.
Collect
Almighty God, Ruler of the universe, we lift our prayers this morning for all the people of the world. Especially do we pray for the leaders of the nations that they may rise above self-interest, greed, and lust for power, and come to the realization that only as we learn to live together with a common goal of bringing peace to the world will we be able to meet the needs of the people of the world. Bless all those who are working for peace, and hasten the day when humankind will learn war no more. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O God, through Jesus Christ we know it is your will that everyone should be saved, and yet time and again we have failed to bear witness to your love to those who do not know you. Forgive our weakness, O Lord, and by your Holy Spirit working through us, enable us to be more faithful in testifying to your love and compassion. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Heavenly Father, may these gifts help to ignite our church into becoming a beacon of love, reconciliation, and peacemaking in our community and throughout the world. Amen.
Hymns
"Majesty, Worship His Majesty"
"Surely The Presence Of The Lord"
"Stand Up And Bless The Lord"
Proper 20/Ordinary Time 25
Sunday between September 18 and September 24 inclusive
Gospel Lesson: Luke 16:1-13
Theme: You Cannot Serve Two Masters
Call To Worship
Jesus taught us that you cannot serve two masters. If you try, you will hate one and love the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
Come, let us worship the Lord God, our Master and our Friend.
Collect
O God, you created the world and all that is in it, and it was good. You entrusted your creation to us, but we have not been faithful stewards. Greed, the desire for power, and the wish to control others have caused us to create problems rather than solve them. May this time of worship enable us to see once again our responsibility as your stewards, and to realize that we cannot serve both God and money. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
God of mercy, we come to you with penitent hearts seeking forgiveness. We have been quick to learn the ways of the world: to seek power over others, always to be on the lookout for self, to make decisions based on greed; but we have been slow in learning the teachings of Jesus: to love mercy, to lose oneself in service to others, to be forgiving, and to love you and our neighbors as ourselves. Fill us with your Holy Spirit, we pray, that we may be cleansed of our sins and find what it means to be new persons in Christ. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
O Lord, you have blessed us in so many ways that we wish to be a blessing to others. Accept these gifts, guide those who will direct their use, and may they be instruments of your blessing to others. Amen.
Hymns
"My Jesus, I Love Thee"
"O Jesus, I Have Promised"
"Take My Life, And Let It Be Consecrated"
