Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series VII, Cycle C
Object:
First Lesson: Jeremiah 8:18--9:1
Theme: Real Relief
Call To Worship (based on Psalm 113)
Women: Praise the Lord! Praise, O servants of the Lord; praise the name of the Lord.
Men: Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time on and forevermore.
Right Side: From the rising of the sun to its setting the name of the Lord is to be praised.
Left Side: The Lord is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens.
Women: Who is like the Lord our God, who is seated on high,
Men: who looks far down on the heavens and the earth?
Right Side: He raises the poor from the dust, and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
Left Side: to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people.
All: Praise the Lord!
Collect (built around Jeremiah 8:20-22)
One: "The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved."
All: For the hurt of my poor people I am hurt, I mourn, and dismay has taken hold of me.
One And All: Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then has the health of my poor people not been restored?
Hear our prayer, Lord, as we call to you from the depths of our misery. Hear our prayer as we realize we are called to minister to the misery of others. Bless us in our brokenness with your balm, with your peace that passes understanding. Find us. Heal us. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we will praise, on this day and every day. We have seen the terrible power of evil in the world, but we have felt, in our hearts, your indomitable spirit of love, and know you will triumph. We take our stand, this day, with you, on the side of the poor and the needy. We take our place with the marginalized, the hungry, the terrified, the lonely. We pray that you will call us in ministry to your people everywhere, as surely as you have called us into your presence here in this church today. Be with us. Sustain us. Abide with us. We praise you! Praise the Lord! Amen.
