Call To Worship
From Psalm 124.
Leader:
If the Lord had not been on our side -- let the people say it,
People:
If the Lord had not been on our side when the attack came,
Leader:
We would have been swallowed alive;
People:
The flood would have engulfed us,
Leader:
The raging waters would have swept us away.
People:
Praise be to the Lord, who has not let us be destroyed.
Leader:
We have escaped like a bird out of the fowler's snare;
People:
The snare has been broken, and we have escaped.
Leader:
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
People:
The maker of heaven and earth.
A general Call To Worship. It is about worship!
Leader:
Worship. Hmm.
People:
Worship!
Leader:
Wor -- ship
People:
Worth -- ship.
Leader:
Worthy -- ship
People:
Ahh -- worthiness!
Leader:
God is worthy.
People:
Give God his worth.
Leader:
Acknowledge God's worthiness.
People:
Worth -- someone's, or something's, value.
Leader:
Putting that someone or something in its proper place,
People:
Removing ourselves from life's throne,
Leader:
And putting God back on that throne where he belongs.
People:
Worth -- ship.
Leader:
Worship.
People:
Hmm.
Leader:
Let's do it.
Option two.
Leader:
Tiredness deep in our bones:
People:
Come experience the rest of God.
Leader:
Sadness deep in our souls:
People:
Come experience the gladness of the Lord.
Leader:
Darkness and confusion deep in our minds:
People:
Come experience the light of the world.
Leader:
Yes, come let us experience our God.
People:
Amen.
God is on our side.
Leader:
In our world and in this room,
People:
The afflicted are suffering;
Leader:
God does not despise or belittle them.
People:
They are forgotten and forsaken;
Leader:
God does not ignore them.
People:
The hurting desperately cry for help;
Leader:
God listens to their cries,
People:
And comes to their aid.
Leader:
God is near to the brokenhearted,
People:
He saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Leader:
All who know the Lord,
People:
Praise him!
Leader:
Honor him!
People:
Revere him!
Leader:
Worship him!
An option if you are emphasizing a celebration of World Communion.
Leader:
Clap your hands, all you people of God!
People:
(Loud applause)
Leader:
Shout your praises to the Lord!
People:
Praise you, Lord! Praise you!
Leader:
For you, O Lord, are good.
People:
You reign over all the earth.
Leader:
Praise you!
People:
Hallelujah!
Leader:
Amen.
People:
Amen!
Another World Communion emphasis -- based on Galatians 3:28.
Leader:
Paul said, "There is no longer Jew nor Greek;
People:
Slave nor free;
Leader:
Male nor female;
People:
For all are one in Christ."
Leader:
Today we say, "There is no longer black nor white;
People:
Palestinian or Israeli;
Leader:
Serbian or Croatian;
People:
American or Iraqi;
Leader:
For all who are in Christ
People:
Are one."
Leader:
Let us celebrate the love that breaks down dividing walls;
People:
Bridges gulfs,
Leader:
Overcomes differences,
People:
And brings a powerful unity
Leader:
For all the world
People:
And the principalities and powers
Leader:
To see.
People:
Amen.
This one celebrates our diversity in Christ.
Leader:
Gloria, the Hispanic woman;
People:
Created in the image of God.
Leader:
Jamaal, the African-American;
People:
Created in the image of God.
Leader:
Tom, the gay guy;
People:
Created in the image of God.
Leader:
And cranky old Susanna;
People:
Created in the image of God.
Leader:
Little Mikey with Down's Syndrome;
People:
Created in the image of God.
Leader:
Abdul who worships Allah;
People:
Created in the image of God.
Leader:
Jacob who is in prison for murder;
People:
Created in the image of God.
Leader:
And your self-righteous neighbor who puts everyone down;
People:
Created in the image of God.
Leader:
You see, the point is that all people
People:
Carry within them
Leader:
The image of our holy and glorious God. So even if it is hidden or marred,
People:
There is reason to celebrate every person.
Leader:
Let us celebrate the God who creates,
People:
And the people this God has made.
Leader:
Amen.
People:
Amen!
Prayer Of Confession
These prayers all have to do with things that we should "cut off" from our lives. They are therefore connected to the Mark 9 passage where Jesus talks about cutting off our hands and feet, and plucking out our eyes if they cause us to sin. This first one incorporates an Assurance Of Pardon.
Leader:
Let's take a little inventory this morning.
People:
Meaning what?
Leader:
Inventory. Stock-taking. Only we'll be checking out the shelves of our souls.
People:
Okay.
Leader:
Let's see now -- How many have a little gossip on the shelves?
People:
Yes. Got several boxes of that.
Leader:
How about judgmentalism?
People:
Got a good supply of that, too.
Leader:
And prejudice?
People:
Yes.
Leader:
And have you any impure thoughts?
People:
I'd rather not say.
Leader:
I'll take that as a yes. Any untruthfulness?
People:
I'd be lying if I said, "No."
Leader:
Another yes. Covetousness?
People:
Yes, we have that, too.
Leader:
Your shelves seem to be quite full.
People:
And your point is ...
Leader:
That we all have shelves stocked with sin, but Jesus has given us an eternally blank slate.
People:
He's really erased the slate?
Leader:
If we repent of our sin and believe in him,
People:
He forgives,
Leader:
And forgets.
People:
What great news!
Leader:
Amen.
This prayer uses an analogy from literature.
Leader:
The Lilliputians restrained and controlled Gulliver just as the myriad trivialities of life restrain and control us.
People:
Father, forgive us
Leader:
For allowing our lives to be trivialized;
People:
For getting so bogged down in the small things
Leader:
That life's beauty,
People:
The wonder of work,
Leader:
The loveliness of loved ones,
People:
The marvel of marriage,
Leader:
The splendor of salvation,
People:
The glory of God,
Leader:
Are missed by us.
People:
Forgive us, and send us out today
Leader:
Unburdened,
People:
And open to all the fullness of life
Leader:
Lived in Christ.
People:
Amen.
A confession that acknowledges our misguided attentions.
Leader:
Worthy of more praise than we can muster.
People:
Worthy of adulation without end.
Leader:
Worthy of "bow your face to the ground" humility.
People:
Worthy of stunned, unbroken silence.
Leader:
Worthy of the love of every creature.
People:
Worthy of gratitude overflowing.
Leader:
Worthy of total slavish obedience.
People:
Our God is worthy.
Leader:
And we confess, Lord, that we are misers with our praise;
People:
That we adore celebrities and not their Maker;
Leader:
That we love our "stuff" more than we love you;
People:
That the idea that we have a right to have all we have
Leader:
Has drained us of gratitude
People:
And made us slaves to the material.;
Leader:
That we have given worth to all the wrong things.
People:
Forgive us, Father,
Leader:
And crush out of our hearts all that turns us from you;
People:
The only one who is truly worthy.
Leader:
Amen.
People:
Amen.
Here is one that might work if you are emphasizing, as part of a World Communion celebration, Christian unity across cultural and national lines.
Leader:
Hate crimes against Muslims in America in 2000,
People:

Leader:

Leader:
Jesus said, "So what if you love only those who love you? Don't even the pagans do that? I say to you, love your enemies, then your reward will be great in heaven."
People:
Lord, forgive us that the reach of our love is short,
Leader:
And disturb our hearts until we lengthen its reach beyond those who love us.
People:
So that it might reach to the needy,
Leader:
The lonely,
People:
The hopeless,
Leader:
The sorrowful,
People:
And the lost.
Leader:
We pray in the name of the one who loved all,
People:
Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Assurance Of Pardon
Here is the good news amidst the bad; forgiveness has been granted and the light has been shone into this present darkness.
All we need do is receive and follow. Let us do it!
Another idea.
Leader:
I fall on my knees and cry, "Lord, I cannot escape this pit into which I have fallen." And a voice says:
People:
But all things are possible with God.
Leader:
Yeah, well I'm in so deep I don't think even God can free me.
People:
But if the Son frees you, you will be free indeed.
Leader:
And how do I find this Son?
People:
Seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened, ask and it shall be given to you.
Leader:
May it be so.
People:
May it be so.
Prayer Of Dedication
Scripture tells us that the prayers of a righteous man are powerful and effective. Lord, hear now our prayers as we offer our gifts and ourselves to be used by you in the work of the kingdom. Make us into whatever you need us to be, and use us and ours. We ask it in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Prayer For Illumination
Leader:
My son came in the room and spoke to me last night while I was watching television. I didn't hear a word he said.
People:
My Lord goes with me everywhere I go. He speaks to me all the time.
Leader:
I often don't hear what he says because I am distracted with the television,
People:
Or the newspaper, or a project, or my worries.
Leader:
Lord, we need your strength to help us to hear,
People:
Really hear,
Leader:
What you wish to say to us today.
People:
Give us that strength. Amen.
Pastoral Prayer
Lord, James tells us that we are to confess our sins to one another, that we might be healed. But the idea of telling others about our sins doesn't really appeal to us. We are a private people. We keep not only sins to ourselves, but weaknesses, and needs as well. We do not want people to know our business. Help us to break down these walls that we have between ourselves, that we might begin to know how beautiful it can be to be in a relationship with others in Christ who truly know us, and yet truly love us. These kinds of relationships are where your grace, O Lord, is made manifest in our lives. These kinds of relationships not only heal us of the shame that holds us down, but also empower us to live victorious lives that will be a light of hope to others in our world.
We ask in Jesus' name. Amen.
Benediction
Harsh words from Jesus! "If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off." Let us go forth committed to removing from our lives the causes of sin.
