Exploring The Message
Happy is everyone who fears the Lord,
who walks in his ways.
You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands;
you shall be happy, and it shall go well with you.
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house;
your children will be like olive shoots around your table.
Thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord.
The Lord bless you from Zion.
May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem
all the days of your life.
May you see your children's children.
Peace be upon Israel!
Alternate Image
The Singer is at table with his family. An abundant amount of
nutritious, eye-pleasing and tongue-delighting food is spread
before them. His parents beam as they look upon their children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren gathered around the table.
The little ones poke one another and grin and laugh over childish
riddles as they stuff their mouths with food and their minds with
new pranks to play. The Singer's brothers, sisters and cousins
share their stories of jobs, hobbies, hopes and dreams.
As the food is eaten, the wine sipped and the conversation
flows, the Singer utters an eye-opening prayer of thanksgiving to
their host, their elder brother. Their elder brother has blessed
each one of them with a life of meaning and purpose.
Reflection
Tables are wonderful places to gather. We gather around work
tables for common, shared efforts. We sit down and rest our
elbows at discussion tables where we seek meaning and share
philosophies. And we assemble around tables to eat the bounty God
has provided. All of these tables are God's tables. Tables where
our brother Jesus has called us to think, work and enjoy each
other. Places where we share common and varied callings and where
we give thanks for all the blessings God has given his family.
