Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Deuteronomy 34:1-12
Theme: Growing Up
Call To Worship
Leader: Like Joshua of old, we are full of the spirit of wisdom because of those who have gone before us.
People: We enter the millennium with delicately patterned heirlooms of attitude.
Leader: We come with a heritage of experience.
People: We bring the collected learning of science and medicine, of experiment and proof.
Leader: We come with the certainty of being the people of God.
All: We approach the future as the people of God.
Collect
Gracious God, we are grateful for a generous heritage of mentors. Guide us so that we in turn might provide a quality of leadership that will encourage a world of higher morals and values. In the spirit of Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Assuming leadership calls for springing beyond hurdles of dependency, diffident reluctance to dare, and sluggish following of others. As we lead, O God, we trust your infusion into our hearts of a proper measure of perspective so we might balance tradition with vision. Amen.
60A Hymns
"God, We Thank You For Our People" or "God Who Stretched The Spangled Heavens" Tune: HOLY MANNA
"Take My Gifts" or "Take My Life, And Let It Be Consecrated" Tune: HOLY MANNA, TALAVERA TERRACE, or VIENNA
"God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending" or "Glorious Things Of [Thee][You] Are Spoken" Tune: AUSTRIAN HYMN
Proper 25
Sunday between October 23 and October 29 inclusive
Second Lesson: 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8
Theme: Sharing Ourselves
Call To Worship
Leader: Let us care for each other as Jesus would. Let us seek the brokenhearted and others needing a gentle word. Let us dare to share ourselves as well as the message of the church.
People: Let us worship our God and our Sustainer.
Collect
Despite weaknesses and shortcomings, O God, we live our faith in community. Despite set goals and careful designs, plans stray. We look to you, therefore, for strength to maintain a balance of the actual with the ambition. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Gracious God, let the courage fueling our leadership ventures spring from right motives. Help us to set aside opposition as well as greed, flattery, and praise-seeking. Remind us that we chose to follow Christ and we were chosen to be Christians today for a reason. In our efforts to manage the church, help us guard against becoming so organized that we hold people at a distance, so involved in telling the messages of our faith that we forget to live them. In the spirit of Jesus Christ. Amen.
60A Hymns
"Jesus, With Thy Church Abide" Tune: VIENNA
"Make Me A Captive, Lord" Tune: LLANLLYFNI
"In The Cross Of Christ I Glory" Tune: RATHBUN
Proper 25
Sunday between October 23 and October 29 inclusive
Gospel: Matthew 22:34-46
Theme: Love
Call To Worship
As we gather for worship today, hear again the words of Jesus Christ: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. Love your neighbor as yourself. All else in our faith hangs on these two commandments.
Collect
Holy Parent of Jesus the Christ and our Parent, we desire to deepen our comprehension of what it means to love you. Because we are from you, we want to become more adept at loving ourselves. Let growth of empathy go hand in hand with loving our neighbor. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
God, teach me to ask first if a particular action reflects my loving you with my whole being -- with heart, soul, and mind. Teach me next to ask, does this action reveal both that I love myself and that I act out of love toward my neighbor? I am determined to focus my life upon these two great commandments with your help and in the name of Jesus. Amen.
60A Hymns
"Glory Be To God On High" Tune: GWALCHMAI
"[All][He] Who Would Valiant Be" Tune: ST. DUNSTAN'S
"Jesus, Thou Divine Companion" Tune: PLEADING SAVIOR
