Object:
Second Lesson: 2 Thessalonians 1:1-4, 11-12
Theme: Real Churches Get Heat
Call To Worship
(based on Job 19:23-25 and 2 Thessalonians 2:15-17)(based on Job 19:23-25 and 2 Thessalonians 2:15-17)
One: Let us gather to worship, echoing the words of Job in his affliction ...
All: "O that my words were written down! O that they were inscribed in a book!
Men: O that with an iron pen and with lead they were engraved on a rock forever!
Women: For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth...."
One: Clinging to God's promise of a Redeemer, we call to mind the words of the Apostle Paul:
All: So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter.
Men: Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope,
Women: comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word.
One: Let us pray.
Collect
We praise you, Lord, for the wonder of your salvation, which is all around us, for your Spirit that moves in our midst, for your creation which provides the foundation of our security. In the midst of adversity we proclaim that our Redeemer lives. Comfort our hearts and strengthen them in every good work and deed. Help us to stand firm and hold fast to what we have been taught by word of mouth or letter. Grant us a clear vision of our Lord Jesus Christ, that we may proclaim your eternal comfort and good hope. Bless us in our gathering today, and in our going hence. These things we pray in the name of this risen Lord. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Today we pray for your persecuted church -- not us. We whine, we moan about those minor inconveniences that come from living in a free and multicultural society, but we know nothing of the persecution, the pain, the isolation, the imprisonment, the fear, that our brothers and sisters know around the world in lands where it is more than a word to say we have taken up our cross to follow you. We pledge to do more than stand in solidarity with our sisters and brothers -- with the help of your Holy Spirit we hope to reach out to them. Soften the hearts of their leaders and bring closer the day when we may all worship in freedom. Amen.
