Call to Worship
Leader: Rejoice in our God. Praise befits the upright.
People: Praise our God with the lyre; make melody with the harp of ten strings.
Leader: Sing to Yahweh a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.
People: For the word of Yahweh is upright, and all God's work is done in faithfulness.
All: The earth is full of the steadfast love of our God.
Call to Confession
When Jesus heard that the Pharisees had asked, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" he said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick do. Go and learn what this means, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' I have come to call not the righteous but sinners." Let us come before God with our sins as we pray together the Prayer of Confession.
Prayer of Confession
Gracious and loving God, we think of ourselves as righteous and faithful people, but we are often led astray. We come to church each Sunday, but as the week goes on, we forget about our covenant with you. We get tired and irritable - we begin snapping at those we love most. We misuse the power that you have given us. We don't treat each other as we would like to be treated. Forgive us, O God. We do not model Jesus' behavior as he dines with outcasts and sinners. We would rather not have anything to do with people who aren't like us, or who don't behave the way we think they should behave. Forgive us, O God. Give us the humility to treat all people well. Remind us of our relationship with you. Keep us faithful. Amen.
Assurance of Pardon
A woman who had been suffering for twelve years came up behind Jesus and touched the fringes of his cloak, saying to herself, "If I only touch his cloak, I will be made well." Jesus turned to her and said, "Take heart, daughter, your faith has made you well." Take heart, O people. Have faith in Jesus, who died for our sins. We are made well. Amen.
Scripture Readings
Genesis 12:1--9: This passage can easily be acted out by one of the children's Sunday school classes. It is mainly a conversation between God and Abram, but other people are involved. The Cast includes: Narrator, God, Abram, Lot, Sarai, and their servants. Lot and Sarai have no lines, and the rest of the class can be servants. God will be stationed near the altar. Abram and family can be sitting on the steps. When God speaks, all action ceases and Abram turns toward God. As the family travels, have them move around the sanctuary. Have the pulpit be the "oak of Moreh," where God again speaks to Abram and where Abram builds an altar. Then more movement to the middle of the sanctuary where they build another altar and pitch a tent (these movements can all be pantomimed). Then have the group travel on and out a sanctuary door.
Matthew 9:9--13, 18--26: A choral speaking choir could easily speak this passage. Speakers include (X) Choral Speakers, (L) Leader of Synagogue, (J) Jesus, (W) Woman with hemorrhage, and (P) Pharisee. Have the choir stand as follows:
