Proper 5 | Ordinary Time 10
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series VII, Cycle B
First Lesson: 1 Samuel 8:4-11 (12-15) 16-20 (11:14-15)
Theme: Have Your Own Way Instead
Call To Worship
There is a mystery of free will which we cannot fully fathom, wherein we believe that our choices matter, yet somehow God's will shall be done. Let God's will be done in our choice to worship today.
Collect
You alone are king. You alone are Lord. Our allegiance to any other things, person, or organization must come not just a distant second, but light years back of our commitment to you and your kingdom. As we balance our time and our heart's desire we pray that you will intrude, reminding us that you alone are king. You alone are Lord. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Every time we have chosen poorly, Lord, we know that you have not abandoned us, but still seek ways to redeem your people. For the earthly kings we honor, the false gods we serve, we turn this day, and toward you in your glory. Amen.
Hymns
Lead On O King Eternal
Christian, Do You Hear The Lord?
Have Thine Own Way

Second Lesson: 2 Corinthians 4:13--5:1
Theme: Pitch Your Tent
Call To Worship
Trust, God's people, in the wisdom and majesty of an immortal and invisible God!
Collect (built around 2 Corinthians 5:1)
God who sojourns with us, rest a bit with us, for we are worn from a week's care. Pause with us as we pitch our tent, secure in your salvation but exhausted by our afflictions. With or without fear we seek the frontier of your kingdom, for we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Therefore we will roam in ministry and mission, sure of your presence, trusting in your love. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
So often the foundations of our faith are built on sand, dependent on the pronunciations of others whose agendas may not be pure, or leaning on the hope we have in those things that will not last. We praise you, Lord, for the home you have built for us, not with hands, but eternal in the heavens, and stake our claim there, knowing the door is open to all people in all times. Thank you, Lord Jesus. Amen.
Hymns
Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise
Holy Ground
Take My Hand And Lead Me, Father

Gospel Lesson: Mark 3:20-35
Theme: Family Matters
Call To Worship
Calm down. Family matters. But God sees family matters in a different light, the light reflected from the Son of God, illuminating everything when resting where that source belongs, at the center of our lives, at the center of our universe. Put God in the center, because family matters.
Collect
We praise you, Heavenly Father, for the blessings we take for granted in the world that surrounds us. We praise you, Savior Son, for the gift of your people who share this salvation. We praise you, Holy Spirit, for all the unseen ways in which you bind us together in your love. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord God, when our lives are out of kilter it is usually not because the things we love are bad. You have filled the world with good things. It is only when our lives are unbalanced, with our attentions drawn away from you, that we create idols and lose sight of your kingdom. We pray that our lives may remain centered on you so we might enjoy all good things in their season. Amen.
Hymns
What Is This Place?
This Is My Father's World
Brothers And Sisters Of Mine Are The Hungry
