Proper 6
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Genesis 18:1-15
Theme: Hospitable
Call To Worship
Like Abraham's greeting to strangers by the oaks of Mamre, come to worship today with a renewing spirit of hospitality -- hospitality toward the stranger who brings a message, hospitality toward a baby given and growing within, receptivity toward what seems impossible, openness toward a new idea. Offer a little water, select the choice flour and a tender, good calf. Refresh soul and body and prepare to listen.
Collect
Like the beauty of a well-seasoned Sarah, we rejoice in the ability to summon our sense of humor, O God. From our depths and even off the top comes miraculous and sustaining resilience. Let us be ready, God, when your hope comes slipping in. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Even at tender ages, we sometimes get to thinking, dear God, that we are old, that it is too late for us, that the world is passing us by. Then you surprise us. Let our opening to your surprises carry the relaxed welcome of laughter. Rather than the sneer of incredulity, help us lean toward choosing the laughter that accompanies joy. In the name of Christ. Amen.
41A Hymns1

"Let Us Hope When Hope Seems Hopeless" Tune: LET US HOPE or HYFRYDOL

Proper 6
Sunday between June 12 and June 18 inclusive
Second Lesson: Romans 5:1-8
Theme: Hope
Call To Worship
Leader: Suffering produces endurance,
Men: And endurance produces character,
Women: And character produces hope,
All: And hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.
Collect
We are grateful, O God, for the strength of your presence which enables us to move through suffering and to come out on the other side. We come to the comfort of prayer, O Compassionate Creator, because we find peace with you through Jesus Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We speak not often about our suffering, dear God, because we try not to dwell on it. In truth, when we hear that suffering produces endurance, we would rather not have the suffering in the first place. Then we see how we have grown through our pain and distress. It is possible to know hope and peace while living with suffering. Thank you, Holy Comforter. Amen.
