Lectionary Worship Aids
Series VI, Cycle C
Proper 8/Ordinary Time 13
Sunday between June 26 and July 2 inclusive
First Lesson: 2 Kings 2:1-2, 6-14
Theme: "I Will Not Leave You"
Call To Worship
Leader: I cry aloud to God, and he hears me.
People: In times of trouble, I pray to the Lord.
Leader: I will remember your great deeds, Lord.
People: I will recall the wonders you did in the past.
All: Praise be to God!
Collect
Everlasting God, as we gather to worship you, help us to reflect on all that you have done for us. We have been truly blessed in good times and bad, and we have you to thank for your abiding presence that has led us through the wilderness of life to this very day. We thank you, Lord, and praise your holy name. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
God, when everything seems to be going our way, we are quick to take credit for our decisions, and when life brings us disappointment, trials, and temptations, we are often quick to blame you. Forgive our foolishness, O Lord, and help us to see that when things go wrong, we usually have ourselves to blame for not listening to your guidance. When things are going well, we should give you the glory and the praise. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Lord, we know that you are always with us. Guide us in the use of these gifts, we pray, that they may further your kingdom and lead others to know of your great love. Amen.
Hymns
"Spirit Of The Living God"
"Surely The Presence Of The Lord"
"God Will Take Care Of You"
Proper 8/Ordinary Time 13
Sunday between June 26 and July 2 inclusive
Second Lesson: Galatians 5:1, 13-25
Theme: Called To Be Free
Call To Worship
Leader: You are called to be free; but do not let this freedom become an excuse for letting your physical desires control you.
People: We come seeking the power of the Holy Spirit to direct our lives.
Leader: God has called us all to service.
People: We pray for the Spirit to produce in us kindness and goodness, that we may be free to serve the needs of others.
Collect
Almighty God, through your Son, Jesus Christ, you have set us free. Give us this day a clear understanding that we were not set free for self-indulgence but for service. Take from our minds all thoughts of using our freedom to become masters through power, and instill in us a passion to use our freedom to become your faithful servants through love. In Jesus'Êname. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Merciful God, we confess that we have not always been your faithful servants. Sometimes we find it difficult to love as Jesus taught us, and we draw back from any involvement with those whom the world labels outcasts. Forgive us, and let your Holy Spirit work a change in us like that of the Apostle Paul. Then we will go forth with a changed heart to love and serve those whose needs we have too long neglected. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Heavenly Father, let these gifts represent our love and gratitude for you. May they also serve as a sign of our renewed commitment to love our neighbors in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Hymns
"Let My People Seek Their Freedom"
"O Come And Dwell In Me"
"We Shall Overcome"
Proper 8/Ordinary Time 13
Sunday between June 26 and July 2 inclusive
Gospel Lesson: Luke 9:51-62
Theme: The Cost Of Following Jesus
Call To Worship
Leader: Jesus says, "Follow me."
People: We would follow Jesus, but first we have family matters to take care of.
Leader: Jesus says, "If you will follow me, you must be willing to leave the past behind you."
People: We would follow Jesus but ...
Leader: Jesus said that anyone who keeps looking back is of no use for the kingdom of God.
Collect
Lord Jesus, we wish to follow you wherever you lead us. Grant us the power of your Holy Spirit to make this a total commitment. Strengthen our faith and help us to trust you completely so that we may be faithful disciples, serving you whatever the cost. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we start out on the journey following your will, but from time to time we find ourselves looking back. We wonder if we have done the right thing. Would we have been better off seeking success and a name for ourselves? Forgive us for our weakness, we pray, and enable us to put our faith, our trust, our hope in you and you alone. We pray in Jesus'Êname. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Almighty God, it is with great joy that we bring these gifts to you. We are honored to be serving you, and where we cannot go in person we pray that your ministry may reach out through these offerings. Amen.
Hymns
"Take Up Thy Cross"
"Where He Leads Me"
"Are Ye Able?"
