Zoos are no longer in people's good graces.
Religion faces the same problem.
Certain illusions about freedom plague them both.

Call To Worship
Leader: Good morning! It's a beautiful summer day in our neighborhoods!
People: It's morning in the United Stated of America -- our home by birth or by choice!
Leader: With people around the world, we are God's people.
People: With all the citizens of America, we thank God for our freedoms. We are grateful for the men and women who ventured into the unknown territory of democracy hundreds of years ago.
Leader: Thank God for the vision of "One Nation Under God."
People: We are glad for laws and rites, which describe religion and state.
Leader: Thank God for the freedom to pray when and how we feel works for us.
People: We pray and sing, laugh and cry, dance and meditate to express our thoughts to God.
Leader: Then let our celebration begin!
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
God of all Nations -- this land we call "our land" demonstrates your creativity with mountains and rivers, fertile soil and bright skies. This country we call "our country" offers us abundant freedoms and responsibilities. Thank you for the opportunities that have come to us. During this hour, we open our minds and hearts to your refining presence, alert for your guiding voice. Amen.
Call To Confession (Leader)
Distress and disease are part of the human journey. In fear and desperation we often turn to God for comfort -- because there is no other place to go! "Help," we plead. Sometimes our minds play tug of war with our hearts: God has no power -- God has all power and can help me; God is absent from this world -- God lives in me, feeling all my agony and ecstasy. Pray with me the printed prayer and then have your personal conversation with the Holy One.
Community Confession (Unison)
God of Turbulent Winds and Gentle Breezes -- we believe we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to embody love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and self-control.
Continue to live through us to accomplish your reign of justice, your kingdom of peace.
We live in a country that touts personal choice and self development.
Let our decisions and actions never cause harm to others.
Help us to share what we have so that everyone has enough of the necessities for living well.
Remove our nation's need to invade other countries because we covet their resources.
Light us within so we can promote freedom and peace throughout the global village, in our homes, and on our streets. Amen.
Sermon Idea
Holding Onto The Past Is Not Helpful might be a sermon title that could encompass Christian history as well as national history in relation to contemporary issues like language, gender inclusion, age inclusion, race inclusion, expansive images for religious expression, intelligent design, animal slaughter for human pleasure, immigration, profit and meaningful work, USA's place in the world market, and so on. Luke's text might be shaped to ask what our nation does and what we as individuals do when we don't get the reaction we want. Though Psalm 77:10 is not a part of the lectionary reading, it is a real grabber as we consider how to pray, what to believe, and how to live in a culture that has a wide gap between haves and have nots: What hurts me most is this -- that God is no longer powerful (TEV). The story of Elijah passing on his power and reputation to Elisha is a way to ask who the leaders in our country are grooming for public service; we can also ask how and who the church is preparing for leadership responsibilities in the next decade.
Contemporary Affirmation (Unison)
We know God, the Creator, by many names;
we believe that God, the Holy One, loves us and all creation.
We know Jesus of Nazareth taught people to love friends and enemies;
we believe Jesus' teachings lead us to satisfaction in living.
We believe the Holy Spirit is moving throughout the global village,
inviting all peoples to live peaceably together;
we experience the Holy Spirit to be motivating us to journey toward
internal contentment and external service for justice.
In community, we are stimulated intellectually to ask questions
about the meaning of life and Mystery.
We are challenged to know ourselves and to relate to God.
We are soothed during the painful parts of life and in good times,
we share our rejoicings! Hurrah! Yippee! Hallelujah!
Offertory Statement (Leader)
Be aware that you are here either by human or by divine guidance. Be aware that your basic needs, not necessarily your wants, are met. Give as you can to provide resources for this building and for its influence in the neighborhood. Give as you can so that others can be cared for.
Doxology
The Lone, Wild Bird (v. 2, modified), tune: PROSPECT
The ends of earth are in God's hand, The sea's dark deep and far-off land.
And I am yours! I rest in you. Great Spirit, come, and rest in me.
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
Holy One -- we are grateful for the resources that make ministry possible on this street. Thank you for this money and for the talents gathered here. Amen.
Intercessory Prayers (Leader or Readers)
God of the Stranger -- we have all been aliens in one place or another, at one time or another. So while we are thankful for this country, we pray for people who attempt to better their lives by crossing borders illegally. It seems our country cannot any longer absorb the tired and the poor from other nations. Help all humankind to be realistic about the numbers of people this planet can sustain.
God of the Good Samaritan -- as we make our human journey, we are sometimes the brutalized character in Jesus' story. Sometimes we are those who looked the other way. Sometimes we are the ones who bandage wounds and pay for care. Knowing that all these roles belong to most of us, we pray for people around the world who are hungry and homeless, wounded and weary, abused and imprisoned. Enlarge our compassion and shrink our desire to bully others.
God of all Nations -- every clan wants a "promised land" to call home. We all want to be a shining success story. Raise our awareness to the smallness of this planet village and help humankind to learn peace-making, collaborating, and compromising. We pray for Native Americans who struggle to survive with their ancient stories in a complicated world. Open our eyes to options for entertaining ourselves without war games and gambling and fierce competitions. Open our minds to alternate ways of being neighbors needing resources that are beyond our own boundaries. Equip leaders with wisdom beyond their experience.
God of Individuals -- thank you for your sustaining presence day by day. Give us strength sufficient to heal. Give us hope enough to share. Give us joy that runs over to bless each person we meet. Give us peace, contagious peace to spread through every continent. Make real for us the words of the prayer Jesus gave his disciples: Our Father.... Amen.
Benediction (Leader)
Life is a journey to Mystery.
Experiment with multiple names for God;
Explore different ways to respond to the Holy Spirit.
Laugh each day and unbuild the overwhelming towers of the world.
Notice possibilities around each corner; make dreams and cultivate a glad heart!
Holy Spirit empowers you and me to live real life --
Contentment be yours, deep tranquility. Amen.
