Exegetical note: Prophesying at the end of the eighth century B.C. in the southern kingdom of Judah, Micah ignores such international and political incidents as the invasion of the Assyrians and concentrates instead on social injustices. Here God has a "controversy" with the Israelites and intends to "contend" with them and require of them - in the spirit of Amos, Hosea, and Isaiah - not ritual sacrifice, but justice, loving kindness, and a humble walking with God.
