Call to Worship
Pastor:
God is love, but his love requires the obedience of those he loves.
People:
We depend on God's love, but we also depend on his laws.
Pastor:
That's right. His laws are given that we might enjoy life at it's best.
People:
May we be as receptive to God's laws as we are to his love; and live in accordance with his will.
Collect
Eternal God, you have set us free to be your obedient children. Quicken us to obey your commands, and live in harmony with your will; that we may enjoy the blessings of life according to your design. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
Your laws are necessary, O God, for us to live with one another, and with you. But we take them lightly as we rewrite our own guidelines for living. Forgive us when we claim your love, but reject your laws. Instill your laws in our minds, and write them in our hearts; that we may experience the life for which your love has redeemed us. In our Savior's name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"Come, Thou Almighty King"
"Have Thine Own Way, Lord"
"How Gentle God's Commands"
"When We Walk with the Lord"
PROPER 19
Sunday between September 11 and 17 inclusive
Second Lesson: Romans 14:5-12
Theme:
Our convictions should honor God
Call to Worship
Pastor:
God has cleansed us of sin, and raised us to new life through his Son, Jesus our Lord.
People:
Because of our faith in Christ we serve God by living according to our convictions.
Pastor:
Our convictions may differ from one another; but we must be sure that they give honor to God, not to ourselves.
People:
Our lives belong to Jesus, who saved us from the power of sin. Honor and glory be to him!
Collect
Gracious Father, who has lifted us from the depth of sin by the love of Jesus: Unite us in our affirmations of faith; that we may use our convictions to speak in a united voice, giving honor to your great name. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We belong to one church, Father; but we interpret discipleship in different ways, resulting in a variety of convictions. We hurt, rather than help one another as we defend our differences. Forgive us for the fractures we cause, when we ought to bring healing and wholeness to your church. Help us to bind ourselves together in Christian love supporting each other in faith and practice. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"At Length There Dawns the Glorious Day"
"God Send Us Men"
"Lord, Speak to Me"
"O For a Faith That Will Not Shrink"
PROPER 19
Sunday between September 11 and 17 inclusive
Gospel:
Matthew 18:21-35
Theme: The unforgiving servant
Call to Worship
Pastor:
God's forgiveness is so very great when we consider how sinful we are.
People:
We would be doomed for eternity if it were not for God's forgiveness.
Pastor:
Jesus tells us God's forgiveness is not ours if we do not forgive those who sin against us.
People: May God help us forgive others as he forgives us.
Collect
Almighty God, who requires that we forgive those who wrong us, just as you forgive our sins: Give us the grace to forgive one another; that we may restore broken fellowships, and consummate our forgiveness in Christ, through whom we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
As sinners, we depend on your forgiveness, Father. Yet it is that same sinful nature which makes us so unforgiving toward other sinners. Forgive us for holding grudges, and wishing for revenge against our adversaries, when you have been so free with your forgiveness toward us. Remove our bitterness; and fill us with love; that we may express true forgiveness to those who wrong us. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"Eternal Son, Eternal Love"
"Father Eternal, Ruler of Creation"
"God of Grace and God of Glory"
"Lift Up Our Hearts, O King of Kings"
