Save Me, O God, By Your Name
Devotional
Companion to the Psalter
A Devotional Guide to the Psalms
Save me, O God, by your name,
and vindicate me by your might ...
For the insolent have risen against me,
the ruthless seek my life;
they do not set God before them.
But surely, God is my helper;
the Lord is the upholder of my life.
-- Psalm 54:1, 3-4
Theme: Appeal to God, who is just and faithful
Outline
1-3 -- Appeal to God: "The ruthless seek my life."
4-7 -- He thanks God, trusting God will defend and avenge him as in the past.
Notes
• Lament
• See 1 Samuel 23:19 and 26:1 ff. Saul was told of David's hiding in his territory.
For Reflection
• "By your name" = your reputation revealed to us through your saving all who trust in you. David relies on the character of God -- his goodness and saving grace -- for facing daily life and its troubles. Should not this be our confidence and joy at all times?
• How does God's character get slandered in our lives today?
Prayer
As we face each new day, O God, we shall rely on your powerful goodness and grace to uphold us in all our troubles. Let not those who neither know you nor fear your judgment cause our love to grow cold. May your Holy Spirit prompt us to give thanks and praise to you through him who died for the ungodly, Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Amen.
