Say One Thing And Do Another
Children's sermon
THE BIG INFLUENCE OF SMALL THINGS
Exegetical Aim: The difference between saying and doing.
Props: An empty toy box and several toys. Prior to the start of the service, place the toys around the sanctuary for children to find.
Lesson: Good morning! (response) Did you notice anything this morning as you were sitting in the pews? (response) Did you find anything? (toys) There are toys all over the sanctuary. Now, I have a toy box here, but there is a problem with this toy box. What seems to be the problem? (it's empty) It shouldn't be empty. There was a little boy, or was it a little girl, who said he/she was going to pick up all the toys. Was it one of you who said you would pick up the toys? (response) No? Why don't we go ahead and do it anyway? Let's go pick up all the toys and put them back in the box. Send the children out to gather the toys.
Do you pick up your toys at home? (response) How many times does your mom have to tell you to pick up your toys? (response) Is she ever angry when she asks you? (response) How does she sound when she tells you the third time to pick them up? (response) Why do you think she is angry? (response) I think I know why. An hour goes by and the toys are not picked up. And then another hour goes by and guess what? (response) The toys still have not been picked up.
Application: Is it wrong to say one thing and then do another? (response) Why is it wrong to say, "Yes, Mom," and then not do as you're told? (response) Jesus even told a story about a boy who said, "Yes, I'll do it," but he never did what he said he would do. Jesus said that boy was disobedient. But you were so good helping me pick up the toys here, I just know that you are going to be a big help around the house when you're asked to pick up your toys. So, what are you going to do when Mom asks you to pick up? (response) How many times is she going to ask you? (one) Good!
Let's Pray: Father, help us not to be like the boy in the Bible who said one thing and did another. Help us to be obedient. Amen.

Philippians 2:1-13
What An Image!
Exegetical Aim: Jesus took on our image to show the love of God toward us.
Props: A baby picture of yourself and a small--framed mirror.
Lesson: I want to show you a picture. Who is this picture of? (response) Yes, this is a picture of me. Hold the picture up to your face. What parts look like me? (response) As I look at this picture, I can see similarities with my mom and dad. Point out that your nose is your mother's, your mouth is your father's, etc. When you're born, you take on the likeness of your mom and dad. When I look at this picture, I see my mom and dad.
Now I have something to show you. Use the mirror here. I will show you this picture one at a time, but don't tell anyone who's in it, okay? Show the mirror to each child. Who was in the picture? (response) You? Ask another child. Who did you see in the picture? (response) What's going on here? (response) Oh, it was a mirror. And each of you saw an image of yourself? (response)
Application: Did you know that God has given us a mirror? It's a very special mirror, and if you look into this mirror, you will see the very face of God. Have any of you ever looked into God's mirror? (response) The mirror is Jesus. Whenever we look at the life of Jesus, we see the image of God. Jesus was honest, just like God. He was faithful, just like God. Jesus was patient, just like God. Name some other things Jesus was. (response) All these things tell us that when we look at Jesus, we see God. He never did anything bad. He was perfect just like God.
Let's Pray: God, when we look at the life of Jesus, we look into a mirror and see the Father reflected there. Your son is holy, just as you. Amen.
