Second Sunday In Advent
For Philippians 1:3-11
(Distribute this sheet to the readers.)
Date:
Reader A:
Reader B:
Introit
(As the introit is being sung, Readers A and B come forward and stand by the Advent wreath until the music is finished.)
Litany
Reader A:
Please turn to the Advent litany in your bulletins.
(Pause as they do so.)
If we keep our minds steadfast and trust in God,
we will be kept in perfect peace.
God's light came to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the path of peace.
Scripture
Reader B:
Hear these words of promise and prayer that Paul gives for the completion of his good work until Christ comes again:
Reader A:
I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart; for whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God's grace with me. God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.
And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ -- to the glory and praise of God.
Lighting Of The First And Second Advent Candles
Reader B:
On this second Sunday in Advent, along with the candle of hope, we light the candle of peace. We find peace through a comforting and tender God.
(While Reader B is reading, Reader A uses the small candle at the back of the wreath to take the light from the altar candle and transfer it to the front candle and then the side purple candle. Extinguish the small candle and return it to the back of the wreath.)
Prayer
Reader B:
Let us pray:
Almighty God, we look forward to your coming. For you will bring peace in this struggling world. Help us to begin this peace by keeping our minds on you. Amen.
Introit
