First Lesson: Isaiah 11:1-10
Theme: From Jesse's Stump
Call To Worship
Leader: The spirit of God shall rest on him,

People: This little child.
Leader: The spirit of knowledge and the fear of God.

Collect
From the time of his birth, O Holy Creator, nations and persons have been curious about your child. Increase our curiosity this Advent season so we also might be led by him with roots from the beginning of time. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Could it be, O God, that we too might make decisions equitable for all people, decisions based not on superficial observance and overhearing but on the fairness and justice of high moral standards -- because of this little child's showing us the way? We pray with expectation. Amen.
02A Hymns
"Lo, How A Rose [E'er Blooming][Is Growing]" Tune: ES IST EIN' ROS'

Theme: Embrace Hope
Call To Worship
Leader: Lay aside discouragement, take on hope.
People: Come, Quiet One, slip into our hearts.
Leader: Lay aside resignation, hug tenacity.
People: Come, Holy Child, stir our caring.
Leader: Lay aside unfaithful attitudes, be steadfast.
All: We welcome your coming.
Collect
God of Hope, let us know the peace of believing. Let us hear the truths of the Bible as more than empty, old words. Let us come as your people wanting again to be faithful, beginning anew to practice being honorable. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Christmas again, so what? Christmas again, so we give gifts from duty? Christmas again, so we overeat, over-everything? Christmas again, so we feign having the spirit? Help us, Steadfast God, to listen to the story with the first-time hearing of children. Amen.
02A Hymns
"Come, [O][Thou] Long-Expected Jesus" Tune: STUTTGART
"O How Shall I Receive You" Tune: ST. THEODULPH
"Hark The Herald Angels Sing" Tune: MENDELSSOHN
Second Sunday In Advent
Gospel: Matthew 3:1-12
Theme: A Straight Path
Call To Worship
Leader: From the beginning, nothing about Jesus is devious. The paths that John the Baptist prepares for Jesus are straight.
People: We are weary from circling aimlessly through a densely wooded life filled with too many choices and few good purposes. We are ready to follow straight paths.
Leader: Let us untie the knots and straighten the tangles from our lives so our path to the manger follows a straight, uninterrupted course.
People: Through our wanderings, we have created crooked paths of uncertainty, indecision, and doubt.
All: Come, let us clear the way for hope.
Collect
The infant we expect will mature to walk down many paths as a trailblazer for you, O God. As he clears paths to set us free from our fears and sins, let us make a path from our hearts to receive him. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Inspire us to turn away from generating chaos. Still us from cluttering the path with debris. Give strength to our turning toward you as we await the holy birth. Amen.
