Second Sunday Of Easter
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Acts 2:14a, 22-32
Theme: But God Is
Call To Worship
Leader: Life accidents, turns of events, chance happenings, and even life according to plans can shake us. Know that with God immediately present for us to call upon, not only can we journey through life spiritually unscathed but we can proceed with hope and with assurance.
All: Praise to the living God.
Collect
Gracious God, you bring a song to our lips. You warm our hearts with encouragement to keep trying. You invite us to live fully and with design. We are grateful, O God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We, like David, would see you always before us, O God. We would reserve part of our hearts and minds for attending to your presence in our lives. To You, who are with us, in us, and all around us, we give honor and praise. Amen.
29A Hymns
"God, Whose Love Is Reigning O'er Us" Tune: LAUDA ANIMA
"Praise The Lord, His Glories Show" Tune: LLANFAIR
"Sing Praise To God Who Reigns Above" Tune: MIT FREUDEN ZART
Second Sunday Of Easter
Second Lesson: 1 Peter 1:3-9
Theme: Imperishable Inheritance
Call To Worship
One miracle of Easter is that, while we have not seen Christ, we love him and sense his love for us. An outcome of this faith is an indescribable joy. Such joy does not come from eating comfort food, taking the afternoon off, or engaging in other renewing but fleeting activities. Joy connects us with what lasts forever. Joy flows like new birth into a living hope.
Collect
Although we have not seen you, O God, we love you. We have become aware of your saving love for us through the gift of this inheritance. Through Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
All: Despite the many words of Easter, dear God, we still wonder if Easter addresses us.
Leader: Be assured that the words of Easter are for you.
People: We are concerned that after several days the joy of the Easter words will fade and we will return to the same humdrum.
Leader: Be confident that while we all return to everyday activities, we have been saved permanently from the power of evil. The peace of God is with us.
People: The peace of God goes with us. Thanks be to you, O God, our Savior and Sustainer. Amen.
29A Hymns
"God Of The Living, In Whose Eyes" Tune: GOTTLOB, ES GEHT
"Jesus, The Very Thought Of You [Thee]" Tune: ST. AGNES
"Peace I Leave With You, My Friends" Tune: PEACE, MY FRIENDS
Second Sunday Of Easter
Gospel: John 20:19-31
Theme: Do You Doubt?
Call To Worship
Do not doubt but believe. Receive the Holy Spirit. Blessed are you who have not seen and yet have come to believe. Peace be with you. Come now, as true worshipers to worship God in spirit and in truth.
Collect
We come here hoping to believe. In spite of ourselves, our wanting the tangible proof, we choose to lay aside doubt. Despite ourselves, we choose to see for a moment with other eyes than those of science and logic. We choose to listen in the silence for a presence that needs no hearing or touch. Help us let go of doubt, O God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
"Unless I see for myself, feel with my own fingers, and hear firsthand, I will not believe," we say. Forgive us, God, for being so stubbornly unbelieving. Thank you for understanding our peculiarities. Thank you for providing ways for us to leap to belief so we might know that your peace is with us. Amen.
29A Hymns
"God Himself Is [With Us][Present]" Tune: ARNSBERG or WUNDERBARER KONIG
"For The Beauty Of The Earth" Tune: DIX
"The Day Of Resurrection" Tune: LANCASHIRE
