SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids -- Series C
First Lesson: Genesis 15:1-12, 17-18
Theme: Faith is belief in God's covenant promise
Call to Worship
Pastor:
When God promises to enter into a covenant relationship with us, we can depend on him to keep his promise.
People:
We believe God has promised to do that by offering redemption in the New Covenant through his Son.
Pastor:
Believing in that promise is the expression of faith that God desires of us.
People:
We commit ourselves to live with God in the covenant relationship he offers through Christ, our Savior.
Collect
O loving God, who has promised your redemptive love to persons of every generation even though they do not deserve it: Grant us faith to believe you have included us in your promise of salvation through Christ Jesus our Lord, that we may be united with you in a covenant relationship of redemption. Hear us for the sake of Jesus. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
Dear Lord, our nature makes us feel we are capable of taking care of ourselves. But we know we are dependent on your mercy and grace to restore us to wholeness. Forgive us when we have wanted to be in covenant with you, only to receive your benefits, without giving ourselves to you. By faith we believe your promises and give ourselves to Christ our Savior, through whom we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"All the Way My Savior Leads Me"
"Beneath the Cross of Jesus"
"Standing on the Promises"
" 'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus"
No. 59 - SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT
Second Lesson: Philippians 3:17--4:1
Theme: Our conduct must prove we are citizens of heaven
Call to Worship
Pastor:
The life we live reflects our true nature, regardless of the beliefs we profess.
People:
We profess the Christian faith, and we want to live the Christian life.
Pastor:
As Christians we are not free to live by the desires of the flesh. Our lives must prove we are citizens of God's Kingdom.
People:
We affirm our faith in Christ; and witness to our desire to stand firm in the Christian Life.
Collect
Eternal God, source of our existence, and strength of our being, whose Kingdom is known on earth by those who claim citizenship: Grant us the desire and self-discipline to express our faith through our life style, that body, mind, and soul, we may belong to you. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
Dear God, faith is so hard to put into practice. We do not want to live as enemies of the cross. But we confess our conduct does not always give a favorable witness to the Christian faith. Forgive us when we have lived as though your Kingdom had no control over us. Our only hope is in the cross of Christ. Cleanse us of our sins, that Christ may live in us, revealing our true allegiance. In his name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"Come, Ye That Love the Lord"
"He Who Would Valiant Be"
"I Am Thine, O Lord"
"O Jesus, I Have Promised"
"Take My Life, And Let It Be Consecrated"
No. 60 - SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT
Gospel:
Luke 13:22-35
Theme: When faith rejects redemption
Call to Worship
Pastor:
When faith rejects the Author of faith it ceases to be a source of redemption.
People:
We do not want to feel so righteous that God is unable to redeem us.
Pastor:
Jesus loved Jerusalem, but their faith made them reject his love; so he could not save them.
People:
We pray for faith that is daily nourished by our Redeemer.
Collect
O God of redemption, who sent your Son to share your redeeming love with your children who felt they already had enough faith: Keep us in fellowship with Christ, that the faith we profess may never make us immune to your redemptive work you are trying to accomplish in us. In our Savior's name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We are aware, Lord, that religion can become a barricade to your redeeming love in Christ. Forgive us for taking the faith you have given us, and making it a religion that keeps us out of your reach. We want to be holy, but only as you make us holy, not by deeds of our own. We want to be redeemed, but only by your love, not by any righteousness of ours. We are your children, and we want to be gathered under your protective arms. By faith, we ask for your forgiveness. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"I Am Thine, O Lord"
"My Faith Looks Up to Thee"
"Savior, Thy Dying Love"
"Spirit of Faith, Come Down"
"Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart"
