Second Sunday in Lent
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle C
First Lesson: Genesis 15:1-12, 17-18
Theme: What Will You Give Me?
Call To Worship
Leader: "What will you give me?" God asks.
People: "What will you give me?" we ask.
Leader: God comes to us with a heart open wide.
People: We come to God with our hands open wide.
All: Let our hands and our hearts be open to give, to receive, and to trust.
Collect
Giving God, your generosity is ample. Your reassurance sustains us. You do not leave us to ourselves. Your plans for us are wise. Your promises are firm. All praise to you, O God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We worry and fret, O God. We know that you ask us to give you ourselves. We do our work and give unselfishly. Then we wonder if we have given ourselves away. Will we receive anything in return? Help us to keep everything in balance. Remind us that you keep in sight all that we do and are. Amen.
21C Hymns
"With Hands Open Wide" Tune: ST. DENIO
"Lord Jesus, Who Through Forty Days" Tune: ST. FLAVIAN
"You Gave My Heart New Songs Of Praise" Tune: NEW SONG, WINCHESTER OLD, AZMON

Second Lesson: Philippians 3:17--4:1
Theme: Example
Call To Worship
Leader: When the dreams we dream have died,
People: Let us take time to hope.
Leader: When smiles have disappeared from the faces of those around us,
People: Let us take time for joy.
Leader: When hate, brush-offs, and thanklessness seem the rule,
People: Let us take time for love.
Collect
We ask you to lift us above the belly of earthly things, O God. Reroute our hearts beyond that which brings humiliation to ourselves and dishonor to you. We would stand firm in the transforming power of Christ, in his example of hope. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Gracious God, we try to live as an example. Then we notice all the things we are doing wrong. We cannot possibly be an example. Let us hope when hope seems hopeless. Let us be hope in your name for others caught in worlds of hopelessness. Amen.
21C Hymns
"Take Time To Be Holy" Tune: HOLINESS
"Forgive Our Sins As We Forgive" Tune: DETROIT
"We Can Be Hope" Tune: OHIO OR "Let Us Hope When Hope Seems Hopeless" Tune: HYFRYDOL

Gospel: Luke 13:31-35
Theme: Outfoxing The Fox
Call To Worship
We need tremendous strength to transcend the foxes that threaten our lives. By concentrating on the broader perspective of our goals, we can refuse to let evil divert us. By including God in our choice of attitude when we have little control over external influences, we gain the leverage of faith. Come, let us worship God who teaches us that all can still be well with our souls.
Collect
When our faith becomes as fragile as the filament of a single thread, we still call to you, O God. You keep us from running away before we complete our work. You help us to be wise. Even in our times of distress, you draw from us quiet songs of trust. We are grateful. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Help us, God, to recognize when we are the fox, Herod. Open our eyes to see when we are self-serving. Enable us to discern when we are the one standing in the way of what is right. Turn us around, God. Amen.
21C Hymns
"When The Winds Rage All Around Us" Tune: WE TRUST IN YOU
"Nearer, My God, To [Thee][You]" Tune: BETHANY
"When Peace, Like A River" or "It Is Well With My Soul" Tune: VILLE DU HARE
