Silliness and silence at the Christ's glory
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Based Upon Cycle C Lectionary Gospels
Gospel Theme:
Silliness and silence at the Christ's glory
Gospel Note:
Luke's account of Jesus' transfiguration relates an extraordinary and ineffable experience: a visual and aural manifestation of the Christ's glory. The reaction of the disciples suggests the divine power of the events at the same time it exposes human nature. For only after Peter's absolutely silly and inappropriate suggestion do the disciples adopt an attitude proper to the wonder they have beheld: silence.
Liturgical Color:
White
Suggested Hymns:
How Good, Lord, To Be Here!
O God Of God, O Light Of Light
God, Whose Almighty Word
42
Transfiguration Of Our Lord
Creator God,
We are grateful for the fact that you have an
infinite capacity for surprise!
There are times when the power of the
moment astonishes us and we are able to catch a
fleeting glimpse of your glory.
We are like Peter.
We want to build booths.
We do not know what to say.
Then there are other times when you seem so
far away.
We long for mountaintop experiences which are
altogether too infrequent.
We easily grow impatient.
We are quick to complain.
We question.
Teach us to resist the impulse to cling to
things which do not finally matter.
Help us to remember that you unfold your finest
work within the full view of ordinary people who
are engaged in ordinary life situations.
Increase our faith.
Increase our capacity for surprise.
Amen.
