Snakes On Your Plate
Children's sermon

Matthew To Revelation
Object: a plastic or rubber snake and spider
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you like snakes and spiders? (let them answer) Some of you like them, but a lot of you don't like them. The older they get, the less most people like them. I don't know many older people who like snakes, but when we are young, we do seem to like the things that crawl and slither in the grass.
But now I have another question for you. How would you like to come to dinner or breakfast and ask for an egg or a fish, and, when your mother brought you your food, see a snake or a big spider on your plate instead of the fish or egg? (let them answer) Can you imagine having a plate full of snakes or spiders? (let them answer) I can't either. Do you think that your mother or father would give you snakes and spiders if you asked for a fish or an egg? (let them answer) Fathers and mothers are not like this. We trust our mothers and fathers to give us what we need, and they would never trick us by giving us something that could harm us or scare us.
Jesus told us that our Father in heaven is a lot like our mother and father on earth are in this way. God is not going to trick us with something that would be bad for us or scare us in a terrible way. If we ask for love, he will give us love, and not hate. If we are wanting help, he will give us help, and he will not trick us with something else. Jesus says that we can trust God to give us whatever we need, when we need it.
You would never expect your father or mother to scare you or break a promise to you. Parents are not like that to their children. When they promise something they keep the promise. God is like that also because he never breaks a promise. Of course, we must ask him for the things that we want. We can't just wait and hope that God gives us everything. God wants us to ask for the things that we need, so that he can decide how to give them.
Jesus compared our parents to the Father in heaven often, because they act a lot like the way that God acts toward us. But I want you to know that God loves us even more than our parents, and that means that he loves us a bunch.
The next time that you have something to eat, and you know your mom did not give you a snake or spider, I want you to think about the way God wants to share his life with all of us and answer all of our prayers.
