So Unnecessary!

LECTIONARY TALES FOR THE PULPIT
Series III, Cycle A
Some things are beyond understanding - especially when a loss of life is preventable. Especially when it involves a life just beginning.
Mary had twins. Her first son was delivered but her stomach was unusually large. The doctor suspected she was having another. The other twin came 53 minutes later. But it was too late. They didn't know he was coming. He died in the birth process. So tragic!
Kathy also had twins. They knew twins were coming, and Kathy, her husband, and the doctors were prepared. The birth was uneventful and she took home two cute little girls. At six months one could see that they didn't look alike - they were fraternal twins. Ashley had brown hair, was short, and was the spitting image of her dad. Kaitlyn had blond hair and was long and lean like her mother. She looked like a miniature Kathy. One night Kathy came to check on the girls, only to find that Kaitlyn lay in her end of the crib, dead. They suspected Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, but they will never know what killed her. So unnecessary!
Henry was driving his children to school when his truck slid on a patch of ice. He was wearing his seat belt and was unhurt. His three children, riding unbelted in the front of the truck, were thrown out the front window. They died instantly. Three minutes. Three lives extinguished. It was something that could have been prevented.
Cheryl and Debbie were chatting at the kitchen table while the children were swimming in the pool. Their two--year--olds were out back playing in the dirt. Or that's what they thought. Debbie's oldest screamed, and she and Cheryl came running. The two--year--olds had fallen in the water and in all the noise and excitement, the older children didn't notice. They had drowned. What a pity. What a waste.
Some things are beyond understanding. They defy explanation. They are so unnecessary.
