Some Day, My Prince Will Come ..
Drama
ThespianTheology
Lent/Easter
As I perused the readings for Easter 6, I was struck by their focus on the future glory of God -- and I began to feel the temptation to dwell on that glorious future, to the detriment of living my life joyfully in the here and now.
The pastor of the church I grew up in, many years ago, always talked about "the urgency of the now." That phrase has stayed with me through the years. This is not to say that I always live my life joyfully in the here and now! I have wasted many an hour dwelling on how wonderful it's going to be:
´
when I get out of this rotten job;
´
when my kids finally grow up (what a mistake that one is!);
´
when summer vacation -- or a visit from my kids -- finally comes;
´
et cetera, et cetera, ad nauseam.
Jesus wants us to recognize the urgency of the now, and to live joyfully in it ... no matter what our circumstances may be. That's not always easy, but you know what? It sure is a better way to live!
A production note: You may want to assign individual members of Congregation each of the lines, instead of having everyone give the lines in unison. And of course, ad-libbing is greatly encouraged. Enjoy yourself, and live it now!

Narrator: (Points to Indat) Behold the Reverend Doctor Indat Sweebyenbye ... prophet of destruction and legend in his own cerebellum.
Indat: Drive-by shootings; children killing children; an epidemic of child abuse; hundreds of hours each week of murder, mayhem, and degenerate sex purveyed by the media; absentee fathers and mothers; drug abuse and violence at all levels of society; corruption and degradation at all levels of government; and the people of God ridiculed and persecuted as never before in human history. My brothers and sisters: What does this mean?
Congregation: Tell us, Reverend; tell us!
Indat: It means that this world, which is under the control of the devil, is in its last days. That's what it means!
Congregation: Hallelujah!
Indat: And it means that the great and terrible Day of the Lord is imminent. The Lord Jesus is coming back soon, and he will render eternal judgment against this sinful world!
Congregation: Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
Indat: But in the meantime, what does all this mean for you and me, the faithful ones?
Congregation: Tell us, Reverend; tell us!
Indat: It means that we must be rock-solid faithful, in the face of all this sinfulness and persecution, brothers and sisters. This world is a terrible place, full of tribulation for the Christian. But we must persevere! Life is hard, and we must all carry our crosses bravely, brothers and sisters. For do you know what awaits us, in the sweet bye 'n' bye?
Congregation: Tell us, Reverend; tell us!
Indat: The new Jerusalem awaits us, my brothers and sisters! Some day it will come down from heaven, this new Jerusalem. Its temple will be the Lord God himself ...
Congregation: Hallelujah!
Indat: And the city will have no need of sun or moon to shine upon it, for the glory of God will be its light and its lamp is the Lamb ...
Congregation: Praise the Lord!
Indat: And the gates of the city will never be shut, and there will never be night there ...
Congregation: Hallelujah!
Indat: And get this, my brothers and sisters: Nothing unclean will enter the city, nor anyone who practices abominations -- and we know who they are, don't we?
Congregation: Ay-men, brother! Preach it, Reverend!
Indat: And only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life will be allowed in the new Jerusalem. That's you and me, brothers and sisters!
Congregation: Ay-men! Praise the Lord!
Indat: And the river of the water of life will flow through the city, bright as crystal. And beside the river is the tree of life, with twelve kinds of fruit. This tree is from the Garden of Eden -- and because sin will no longer have control over us, my brothers and sisters, we will be able to partake freely of this precious and luscious fruit!
Congregation: Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
Indat: And nothing accursed will be found in the city any more.
Congregation: Ay-men!
Indat: And you and I will worship the Lord, and we will see him face to face. And we will reign forever and ever!
Congregation: Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
Indat: But remember, my brothers and sisters: In the meantime -- until our Lord comes -- we will have nothing but sorrow and tribulation. So keep your eyes on the prize!
Congregation: Ay-men!
(Leo Judah stands up and comes to center stage)
Indat: And now, let us pray --
Leo: Excuse me, sir, but I have a bit of a problem with what you're saying here.
Indat: (Disdainfully) Who are you, my good man, and what qualifies you to question me?
Leo: My name is Leo Judah, and I'm simply a carpenter --
Indat: A carpenter? Indeed! And you would dispute my 33 years of biblical scholarship? You have no standing here, sir!
Leo: Excuse me, but that's what they said about another carpenter, 2,000 years ago ...
Indat: I certainly hope you're not trying to equate yourself with the Lord, young man! But I suppose it can't hurt to listen to your silly question. Proceed.
Leo: Thank you. Well, sir, you said that the world is a terrible place, and I disagree with that.
Indat: How so?
Leo: When God created heaven and earth, he looked at his creation and he saw that everything he had made was good. If you want to appreciate the goodness of creation, go for a walk in the woods, or sit by a clear mountain stream, or watch a sunset, or listen to a beautiful piece of music, or hold a baby in your arms.
Indat: Bah! Sentimental, humanistic nonsense!
Leo: Say what you will, Doctor; you know that what I tell you is true. You also said that we have nothing to look forward to on earth but sorrow and tribulation. I disagree: Jesus came and lived among us and taught us to know the wonder and joy of the Lord, here and now! He taught with many parables about the kingdom of God, and they all pointed to the fact that we can have a foretaste of that heavenly kingdom, when we live according to the commandment Jesus gave us to love one another.
Indat: Balderdash! The kingdom of God is yet to be established, young man. In the meantime, we live in a fallen world --
Leo: Jesus said, "In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world."
Indat: But, but, but --
Leo: And most importantly, Jesus left his peace with us. This is not the world's peace; it is much more. The peace of Christ gives us the confident assurance, in any circumstance, that we need not fear anything present or future.
Indat: Exactly what I'm saying: We need not fear, because some day, Jesus will come and make all things right!
Leo: Why do you keep looking to "some day"? Jesus lives in your heart, here and now -- and he wants you to live fully and joyfully in the here and now! (Turns to audience) Don't waste your energy thinking about tomorrow! Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness! Don't fret about the evildoers in this world; Jesus has already overcome the world!
Congregation: Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
Indat: (Sputters) But, but, but ...
Leo: (Goes to Indat and puts his arm around him) You just need to lighten up, Doc! come on, let's go for a walk on the beach.
(Leo and Indat exit together, arm in arm, stage right)
