Speaking Up

Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle B
Call To Worship
Let us be filled with the courage of Queen Esther who, upon seeing an opportunity to make a difference, dared to speak up. Let us be filled with the selfless attitude of Esther in restoring freedom where freedom has been lost. Where injustice is epidemic, let us aim for what is just. Come, let us worship God who stands by us.
Collect
We come to you, O wise and just Creator, who has the capacity to turn us from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into rejoicing. Instill in us the confidence to approach those who can help the suffering gain relief from the enemies of abuse, poverty, and discrimination. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
When we recognize a crossroad and have a chance to make a difference in the lives of those around us, show us, O God, the wisdom to focus on what is of highest importance and greatest value. We have good ideas and devise plans which we fail to accomplish. We are not lazy but lacking in bravery. Grant us the nerve to act on our hope. Amen.
56B Hymns1
"Creator Spirit, Come, We Pray" Tune: DICKINSON COLLEGE or PUER NOBIS NASCITUR
"God Our Author And Creator" Tune: JEFFERSON
"Where Cross The Crowded Ways Of Life" Tune: GERMANY
Proper 21
Sunday between September 25 and October 1 inclusive
Second Lesson: James 5:13-20
Theme: Prayer Advocate
Call To Worship
Prayer for one who suffers is an acceptable action. We are far from powerless in this process of healing. Prayer needs a request in order to begin. Prayer needs a pray-er to reconnect us with ourselves, with each other, and with God. Come, let us assume an attitude of prayer as we sing and speak and listen.
Collect
We come in faith to God, whose presence we summon at prayer in behalf of one who suffers. We come in trust to God, who hears us when we care enough to intercede. We come in wonder to God, whose ways of healing far surpass our understanding. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
When we need an advocate in prayer, O God, let us not refrain from asking. Help us understand that by taking others into our confidence, we show not weakness but strength. Keep us ready for change so we might fully participate in the mystery of praying for each other. In the spirit of Jesus the Christ. Amen.
56B Hymns1
"It's Me, It's Me, O Lord," "Not My Brother, Nor My Sister," or "Standing In The Need Of Prayer" Tune: NEED OF PRAYER or PENITENT
"Our Father, Who From Heaven Above" Tune: VATER UNSER
"Nearer, My God, To [Thee][You]" Tune: BETHANY
Proper 21

Gospel: Mark 9:38-50
Theme: Champion In His Name
Call To Worship
Be a champion for the ways of Christ. Be a wholehearted supporter of Christ. Put both your energy and your heart into holding Christ in first place in your life, above all else.
Collect
Just as Christ is for us, you are for us, O great Encourager, and we are for you. We come joyfully as cheerleaders because you steadily root for us. In the spirit of Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Though we choose you as first in our lives, O God, we often fail to sustain our faith by actions that miscarry your teachings. Help us to avoid being our own stumbling blocks. Amen.
