Object: some ordinary coins and some collector's coins
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you know what the word special means? (let them answer) That is very good. Very few things are special, and when we have something that is special it means a lot to us. The funny part of this is that we do not always know or understand the special things. For instance, I have with me some coins. You all like money, don't you? I want to show you some money and tell you a little bit about it.
Here is a penny. It is worth one cent. That's all you can buy with this penny, something worth one cent. Here is another coin that is also a penny, but it is worth ______ (use a value associated with a rare penny). It looks like a penny, and if you went down to the store and gave it to a clerk at the store she might think that it was an ordinary penny and use it that way. But just think what you missed by not knowing that this coin was special.
That is the way it is with Jesus. A lot of people know who Jesus is, but they do not know how special he is. They have heard about him as a great storyteller, a good doctor, and a wonderful teacher, but they do not know him as the Savior. That means that they do not know how special he is for them. It is true that he told terrific stories and made lots of sick people well, and when it came to teaching there was no one better. But when it comes to the special part, they have forgotten, or have never known what it is that makes him special. Jesus is the Savior, and that means that he is able to forgive your sins. Jesus died for you so that you can live forever. Jesus is your brother, and that means that he is very close to you and to your heavenly Father. That is the special part about Jesus.
The next time you see a special coin, perhaps you will remember that Jesus is your brother, your special brother. That is really wonderful, and worth more than all of the money in the world. It is really important to you and to me that we know how special Jesus is and that once we know it, we share it with all of our friends.
I don't want to forget to tell you that you are also very special to your brother Jesus, and that he loves you and all who know him very much.
