Theme: The Lord Needs No House
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series VII, Cycle B
Call To Worship
When has God needed any house but your hearts? When has God dwelt in a more magnificent temple than in your lives? Gather, servants of the King, about the manger, for he is Lord!
Collect (Psalm 89:1-2)
One:
I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever; with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations.
All:
I declare that your steadfast love is established forever; your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
No gift this day we offer, Lord,
More precious than your Son
Who took on flesh, the Living Word,
And every battle won.
Time conquers, rust has won,
And every kingdom gone
Reminds us that the times afford
No other prize but one,
That which we oft ignored,
Salvation, through you won.
Amen.
Hymns
What Is This Place Where We Are Meeting?
O Where Are Kings And Empires Now?
O Little Town Of Bethlehem
Fourth Sunday Of Advent
Second Lesson: Romans 16:25-27
Theme: The Clue That Solves The Mystery!
Call To Worship
The secret is out! There's no hiding it, no putting this message back in the bottle! It's staring us right in the face. Alleluia, Jesus Christ is born again!
Collect (based on Luke 1:49-50)
One:
The mighty one has done great things for us, and holy is his name.
All:
His mercy is for all of us who fear him from generation to generation. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
God of mystery and might, we praise you that at the heart of all the world's sorrows, tribulations, and pain is the solution that is not seen because it is too obvious -- our Savior, your Son, Jesus Christ. Open the door of your word that we might more fully understand the marvelous story of your love for us. We put ourselves in your hands. Amen.
Hymns
Tell Me What Great Thing
Good Christian Friends, Rejoice
Fling Wide The Door, Unbar The Gate
Fourth Sunday Of Advent
Gospel Lesson: Luke 1:26-38
Theme: Step Up To The Plate
Call To Worship (based on Luke 1:37)
One:
Perhaps we have heard this story so many times that we take Mary's response for granted. However, surely all of heaven must have held its breath as the angels waited for the answer of a young teenaged virgin, whose response insured glory but also, as Simeon's prophecy made clear, trials as well.
All:
Here we are, servants of the Lord; let it be with us according to your word!
One:
Our "Yes" to God means more if there is the possibility of saying, "No." God has been waiting for your "Yes" all Advent -- all of time, really.
All:
Here we are, servants of the Lord; let it be with us according to your word!
One:
This day you can say "Yes" to God's assignment, which is waiting for you every day. Open your heart to the call.
All:
Here we are, servants of the Lord; let it be with us according to your word!
Collect
Mighty God, you have done great things for us, looking down upon your lowly servants, and magnifying your power in our lives. Our spirits rejoice in God our Savior. King of kings, Lord of lords, we praise your works, your name, your love! Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Patient Lord, we have kept you waiting. We do not know where this journey will lead, but today we dedicate ourselves to the commission you send, no matter where it may lead. Your light is shining. We ask for your strength regardless of what the result of our response to you might be. Amen.
Hymns
O Little Town Of Bethlehem
Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus (Hyfrydol)
