Call To Worship (Psalm 111:10)
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever.
Collect
Raise up your true prophet in our midst, that we may magnify your glory throughout the world. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession (built around Deuteronomy 18:16)
Proclaiming God, Fiery God, we told you at the foot of the mountain, "If I hear the voice of the Lord my God any more, or ever again see this great fire, I will die." Now we ask that you reveal your Son, your true prophet Jesus to us in fire and glory. Perhaps we will die. Perhaps we will be reborn, transformed, adorned with a light to shine to all the nations. No matter. Have your own way with us. We surrender. We admit that Jesus Christ is Lord! Amen.
Hymns
Here In This Place
Precious Lord, Take My Hand
Holy Spirit, Come With Power
Fourth Sunday After The Epiphany
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 8:1-13
Theme: What Harms, What Heals?
Call To Worship (Psalm 111:1-4)
One:
Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation.
All:
Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them.
One:
Full of honor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever.
All:
He has gained renown by his wonderful deeds; the Lord is gracious and merciful.
Collect (based on 1 Corinthians 8:6)
For us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. All else is shadow, all else illusion. We focus our hearts and minds on the one! Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Precious Jesus, Holy Jesus, in your name we justify our own prejudices and comforts. If we have proven a stumbling block to the least of your children, we offer up our repentance and cast away everything as dross, focusing on your cross. Amen.
Hymns
When I Survey The Wondrous Cross
Majesty
Will You Let Me Be Your Servant?
Fourth Sunday After The Epiphany
Gospel Lesson: Mark 1:21-28
Theme: Nothing To Do With Me
Call To Worship
Let us follow Jesus into the world!
Collect
God of glory, your majesty is visible all around us. You call us to great things. Your praise endures forever. We ask this day that you send us a prophet, one to call us to the great tasks you have set before us. This prophet might be someone new in our midst. It might be someone young, or older. The prophet might speak from the front of the church. The prophet might speak from the back of the church, or the aisles, or from the choir loft, or through the children. Open our hearts and minds to the words of this prophet for which we beg. Send redemption to your people. These things we pray in your name of glory. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession (based on Mark 1:24)
What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God. Quit drawing me away from my pale passions, and from my meditations on mediocrities. Stop pulling me back from the edge of the cliff. Leave me alone, Lord, before you change me forever! Or else, have thine own way. Amen.
Hymns
Praise To The Lord, The Almighty
Seek Ye First
Have Thine Own Way
