Familiar Expressions from the Bible
Object:
Expression: There is nothing new under the sun
Location: Ecclesiastes 1:9 (NRSV)
Verse: What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done; there is nothing new under the sun.
A man and wife from the Midwest had the opportunity to visit some dear friends in a distant southern state. They had not seen this couple for many years. Their visit allowed them to have wonderful talks about the good old days. They enjoyed reliving many happy experiences through their memories.
The couple being visited were very interested in a new manufacturing company that had been established in their town. The man had been appointed the director of personnel over this whole company, and his wife was a very wonderful help to him as they had to organize, hire, and set up the whole organization and administration of this new establishment.
This hard-working couple wouldn't let their friends leave after a few days' visit. They insisted that they stay a full week. Being the director of personnel of this large company, the man got clearance for their friends to have a guided tour of this plant.
The tour took almost a full day. The thing that kept being impressed on them as they were shown all of the manufacturing processes was that the modern technology was based on old processes. The host was an excellent teacher. He would show them a very high-tech process and then back it up with some knowledge of how it "used to be done." Actually, the old, time-tested procedures were still in use, but slightly modified or altered to incorporate an electrical, mechanical, or high-tech process offering more efficiency.
After a delightful day of touring and learning, it could be estimated that at least ten times during the day the host expressed, "So you see, there is nothing new under the sun."
The wisdom of Solomon allowed him to write this very expression. In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon wrote that generations pass on, nature continues in the same way, but nothing new results.
