On a recent tour of Austria and beyond, one day our itinerary was titled "Two Churches and a Castle." One of the churches was the Wies Church, called "The Church in the Field." I've been to Bavaria before, but never before had heard of that church.
As we approached, the church seemed unimpressive. It is a large, hulking structure with a plain white exterior and a surprisingly squat steeple. The Wies Church looks like a totally average Bavarian parish church - just a bit bigger and set in a field, not in town.
