Leader: Our God gives justice to the oppressed and food to the hungry.
People: We rejoice in a righteous God who opens the eyes of the blind.
Leader: Our God watches over the stranger, the orphan, and the widow.
People: Our God reigns forever.
All: Praise the Lord!
Lighting of the Advent Wreath Candle (Joy)
(Choose a couple who are expecting a baby to light the candle. The first two candles should be lit before the service)
Both Voices: Today - the third Sunday of Advent - we light the candle of Joy.
Man: After the angel Gabriel came to Mary and told her that she would become mother to the "Son of the Most High," Mary was filled with conflicting emotions. She went to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who was also pregnant.
Woman: When she came into the room where Elizabeth was sitting, Elizabeth's baby leaped inside of her and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Mary's first words to her cousin were, "My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit is filled with joy toward God my savior."
Man: As we prepare our homes and hearts for Christmas, may we be filled with pure joy. Today we light the candle of joy. (Lights candle)
(Congregation sings Prepare The Way O Zion)
Prayer of Confession
Merciful God, we confess that we are not a patient people. We yell at others in the middle of traffic, we grumble about our fellow workers, we constantly judge others according to our own standards. Help us to be patient, God - like a farmer who waits for rain for his crop. Strengthen us, God, during this Advent season. Help us to learn from Jesus, our model and our example of suffering and patience.
Assurance of Pardon
John the Baptist sent his disciples to ask Jesus, "Are you the one who is to come?" Jesus answered, "Go and tell what you have seen here - the blind can see, the lame walk, the deaf hear, the dead are raised." Through Jesus Christ we are forgiven and filled with joy. Amen.
Scripture Reading (Creative Interpretation of Isaiah 35:1--10)
(A choral speaking choir, alternating the verses with the hymn The Desert Shall Rejoice could speak this scripture passage. The choral speaking choir could be taught the sign language to "The desert shall rejoice, and blossom as a rose" and use it each time a verse of the hymn is sung. Ask the congregation to join in the signing on the last verse)
All Voices: The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad; the desert shall rejoice and blossom;
Voice 1: Like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing.
Congregation: The desert shall rejoice and blossom as a rose it shall blossom abundantly and rejoice with praise and singing.
Voice 2: The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon.
All Voices: They shall see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God.
Voice 3: Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees.
Voice 4: Say to those who are of a fearful heart, "Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God.
Voice 5: He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you."
All Voices: Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped.
Congregation: The desert shall rejoice and blossom as a rose for the ears of the deaf shall hear, and the blind their eyes be opened.
Voice 6: Then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy.
Congregation: The desert shall rejoice and blossom as a rose for the tongue of the mute shall sing and the lame will dance with gladness.
Voice 1: For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert;
Voice 2: The burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water.
Congregation: The desert shall rejoice and blossom as a rose for the ground will become a pool and the dry land springs of water.
Voice 3: The haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes.
All Voices: A highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way;
Voice 4: The unclean shall not travel on it,
Voices 5 and 6: but it shall be for God's people; no traveler, not even fools, shall go astray.
Voice 1: No lion shall be there,
Voice 2: Nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it:
Voice 3: They shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there.
Voices 4, 5, and 6: And the ransomed of the Lord shall return.
Congregation: The desert shall rejoice and blossom as a rose as the ransomed return to God and come singing back to Zion.
All Voices: Everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
Congregation: The desert shall rejoice and blossom as a rose unto Zion we come with joy, for our God has come to save us.
All Voices: The Word of the Lord.
Congregation: Thanks be to God.
