The threshold of the Kingdom
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Cycle B
Gospel Note:
Neither the singling out of a commandment nor the juxtaposing
of the love of God and love of neighbor was new to rabbinic
teaching in Jesus' day, though Jesus' connection between the two
may have been a bit more radical than usual. What is important
here is Jesus' assertion that the scribe's knowing the importance
of these two had brought him to the very threshold of God's
Kingdom. Presumably, the doing of them (through grace) would have
brought him into it.
Liturgical Color:
Green
Suggested Hymns:
Lord Of Light
If You But Trust In God To Guide You
Wake, Awake, Night Is Flying
Oh, That The Lord Would Guide My Ways
My God, How Wonderful Thou Art
I Know That My Redeemer Lives!
Proper 26 ù Pentecost 24 ù OT 31
Lord, we love you and we want to serve you with
our whole heart, soul, mind and strength.
We want to give you our total selves, but we
hold back that little something extra
because we are afraid.
We do not know where this self-giving will lead.
Maybe we are holding out for absolute assurance
that a total commitment to you will be worth it.
We hedge here and there. We waver.
We sit on the fence and play it safe.
But we cannot have it both ways.
Faith means trusting you above everything else.
All the assurance we need is found
in your word.
We know that our relationship with you is right
when we love and serve others in your name.
This is how we receive the absolute assurance
we desire.
Increase our faith, Lord, and help us to place our confidence in you alone.
Amen.
