Object:
Years ago a kindly old Scottish Presbyterian minister, who was remembered only as "Dr. McArthur," used to visit colleges where students were preparing for the ministry. Dr. McArthur's daughter-in-law was Helen Hayes (McArthur), a famous Broadway actress and a noted Christian.
The good old Scotsman would gather us young theologs together and give us wise counsel for our coming years. We could ask him questions and he often had a humorous answer.
Someone asked him about what to do with a cantankerous layman. Dr. McArthur, with a twinkle in his eye, said: "Pastors are supposed to be shepherds of the sheep. And most of the sheep will follow your leadership. But once in a while you may have to throw an old ram over the fence!"
Prophetic words, indeed!
