A Service Of Hymns And Readings For New Year's Day
This hymn service is based on the book of Ecclesiastes. It is suitable for any time of the year, but works well with the New Year, when we think of new beginnings, resolutions, and making our lives better.
This service works best with the following participants:
Pastor
Liturgist
Reader One
Reader Two
(Reader One and Reader Two can also be the Pastor and Liturgist. However, the more people who are involved in leading the worship, the more people who are blessed.)
Scripture passages in this service, which are quoted, are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible.
For visual effect, the altar can be set up with "hills" which contain many different kinds of clocks and calendars. The hills can be done by placing books (hymnals) in various sizes and heights on the altar then covering them with a large cloth -- white or several colors.

A Time To Be Silent ...

The Message
The preacher -- Koheleth -- of Ecclesiastes raises a lot of questions, but is unable to give many concrete answers. He confronts the mystery of life and the hidden ways of God. He appeals for understanding and yet has only the understanding of the philosophers of his day.
But we, in the twenty-first century, have a perspective on life that Koheleth didn't have. We read of life through the eyes of the New Testament, which gives us hope through Christ.
A look over our shoulder through the pages of history shows the way to God.
Reader Two
Ecclesiastes 3:7b; Psalm 46:10a
"... a time to keep silence, and a time to speak ..."; "Be still, and know that I am God!"
Hymn
"Be Still, My Soul"
A Time To Be Born ...

The Message
Sometimes life is difficult. Things just don't go the way we want them to go. People die. People are hurt. Nature runs rampant. It seems sometimes that the world has gone crazy. We begin to say -- or think -- God needs help in ordering the world. But ... is it possible that our help is what got the world in such a mess in the first place?
God knows what is best. God even looked down on humankind's poor attempts at saving ourselves and said, "They need help. It is time. Gabriel, go to Mary of Nazareth."
Reader Two
Luke 2:7
And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
Hymn
"Joy To The World"
A Time To Die ...
Reader One
The Message
Luke tells us that the child grew in wisdom and stature, but the price of life is death. The physical body must die, and beyond that, the spirit of mortals must die because of sin. However, God said, "It is enough. It is finished." And Jesus died our death.
Reader Two
John 19:30
When Jesus had received the wine, he said, "It is finished." Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Hymn
"Alas, And Did My Savior Bleed"
A Time To Laugh (Rejoice) ...
Reader One
The Message
For Koheleth, the preacher, there was nothing new under the sun. But, even with his limited knowledge of life he was able to declare that one who is joined with all the living has hope. He could not fathom a life after death. Can we?
Reader Two
Matthew 28:5-6
But the angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay."
Hymn
"Low In The Grave He Lay"
A Time To Embrace (Friendship) ...
Reader One
The Message
Birth, death, and resurrection all behind him, Jesus could enjoy the fruits of his labors. Koheleth, the preacher, had no perspective of friendship, except when he says, "a person who has no one, either son or brother ... has no one to care about" (cf. Ecclesiastes 4:8). But we know a friend, who is closer even than a brother, sister, son, or daughter.
Reader Two
John 15:12
This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
Hymn
"I've Found A Friend"
A Time To Seek ...
Reader One
The Message
Even the preacher recognized that we all fall short of God's desires for us. We do not always hear and obey; see and follow. Koheleth says, "Surely there is no one," but we have the assurance of God's grace to show us the way to righteousness in spite of our sin.
Reader Two
Psalm 139:23-24
Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Hymn
"More About Jesus"
A Time To Keep, A Time To Cast Away ...
Reader One
The Message
The preacher ends his words with "The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of everyone. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil" (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14).
Reader Two
Matthew 28:19-20
Jesus ends his earthly ministry with the Great Commission. "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
Hymn
"We've A Story To Tell To The Nations"
A Time To Scatter And Praise ...
Benediction (Pastor)
The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all the saints. Amen (Revelation 22:21).
