The Value Of A Smile

... Let the Children Come
Fifty-two Object Lessons For Children In Worship
Object:
Smiley face stickers or pins (It would be helpful to have a large yellow "Happy Face" visual aid prepared beforehand.)
Good morning, boys and girls. (Show "Happy Face.") Does everybody here know what we call this symbol that we now see everywhere these days? (Response -- A happy face.) And do you know what happens to this happy face if I turn it upside down? It becomes a grumpy face, doesn't it? (Demonstrate.)
Let's see how many of you can make a really happy face today. (Have them face the congregation.) Now let's see your grumpiest face. Oh, that's awful! Please turn around so the people don't have to look at you.
Now, I have a question for you. Which face was the easiest for you to make? (Responses should be overwhelming for the happy face. This might open up an opportunity for talking about attitudes which are reflected on our faces.)
People who study things like the functions of the body have actually discovered that it takes fewer muscles to smile than it does to frown. Did you know that?
When we are happy and have a smile on our faces we tend to make other people who are around us happy as well. The same thing is true when we have sad or grumpy faces. Isn't it surprising how we can have an influence on other people just because of the look on our faces?
I think God wants Christian people to be attractive so that others will see the happiness of their lives expressed on their faces and want to know how they find happiness in their lives.
Do you think you can remember to keep your happy face on this week? Maybe this little sticker I have for you will remind you. (Pass out the stickers.)
(Prayer for happy hearts and the joy of the Lord.)
